Here it is today..... Tastefully retored to perfection by Legendary Motorcars.
That Ryan is in my opinion in the top two best restorers today.

SAAC42 was the last time it was racing, now its a concourse car. They made a replica of it for race use.....

I'd like a tilt hood like that on all my cars.

What a legend of a car (ideal for a legend of a driver, Ken Miles)

Happy to say I was part of Legendary’s restoration team on CSX2196, “The Flip Top”. I was also on their restoration team for CSX2026 that was shown at this years Pebble Beach Concours and took home 2nd in class.

Oh, I like the way you have the slots in the screw heads lining up

....but were they actually originally like that on the final evolution of "the Turd"?
If so, would that make it a polished Turd?

Any joking aside, a great job on those cars, particularly the engine on 2026 - but I should/do feel very 'unqualified' in commenting

Cheers!
Glen

Actually those are not screw heads, they are DZUS fasteners.

"I've heard about "The Turd". Think it had an experimental aluminum 390? I understand she "wasn't properly prepared" for racing?

What's the back story?

In general terms I believe they just took a 289 chassis and jammed in the big block. Suspension may have been a bit sketchy and it was nose heavy?

DZUS fasteners…. of course! I should have picked that.
So are the front panels of the foot boxes removable?

I have heard that the Turd was suppose to be powered by aluminum big block, but the Ford NASCAR guys said no, so it was real nose heavy! As for handling, the Daytona's won the 65 Class III with leafsprings. Alan Mann hated them, seems every time they adjusted one corner of the suspension, the other corners would go out of whack! They finally just left them alone, and as one of the drivers said, if one driver could not handle the car, they just unbolted him and bolted in another driver. The last FIA race of 1964, not Monza, that had already happened, I am talking about the Tour de France, the last shot at points to win the Class III for Shelby! Five Cobra's were entered, one was damaged on the transport, so one by one the remaining cars succumbed to drivetrain and suspension problems, thus giving the Ferrari GTO's not only class victories, but overall first and second place wins! The next year Mann learned, you have to baby the Daytona's to win the Class III! Cheers, Dennis

Paul, just saying - the Turd (aka CSX2196) does not exhibit any female characteristics that I am remotely familiar with

Besides, how many ladies would deserve that nickname? None that I know.

Hey, I know I'm in a minority.....but in this case, I'm right

Cheers!
Glen

OK, no further comment from me on the subject. Seems I'm pushing "uphill"

Does anybody know the dimension of the meatballs? I have 19" and 20" and 21" heard. 19" is too small I think. In comparison to the decals on the side I would guess 21".

Nice photo Glen. Where did you find that image? I took that photo. I have the entire series from when it was at mini nats (NorCal SAAC) I took that photo at the park picnic. I’ve never copyrighted or watermarked my images. It’s my own fault for folks re-posting them.
That needs to change on my end going forward.

Best regards,
~Earl J
