I had a similar symptom, which was solved by removing the strainer/sock on the fuel pick up. We diagnosed the problem, by working backwards on the fuel system. When the engine died the carb bowls were empty.
|
Is this a new problem that just started? Has the car been running fine up until lately? When the engine quits after running for a while, can you see fuel in the sight glass of the float bowls? If not, it’s a fuel delivery or vapor lock problem. Try a phenolic spacer under the carb to isolate some of the heat from the engine. If there’s fuel in the bowls and it won’t start, then it’s a heat related electrical problem. Most likely the coil or MSD box.

You have the TFI module on the distributor you can check with freeze spray when the problem occurs. It’s an easy fix if it’s bad, I kinda thought someone had checked it already.
The PIP sensor takes pulling the distributor and a dist gear remover/install tool. There was a class action lawsuit on the TFI module it’s the first thing you check if you have one. Is this motor old and have maybe points or a Pertronix ignition? If so nevermind… |
We still have no idea what kind of ignition you are using.

thx alot |
how old are the fuel lines. Ethanol can cause them to fail internally causing fuel starvation as well.

thx a lot |
Last time I’ll bring it up, what kind of ignition are you running?
|
OK this sounds like a problem I had on my Yacht The fuel tank needs a proper breather....That's it. Attach a tip-over valve.

Coil mount
Is your ignition coil mounted on the motor itself or on the inner fender or firewall?
If it’s on the motor it may well be heat soaking |
Chupee:
How about providing more details about your ignition system? You know, details that may actually help others help you to diagnose and fix the problem. Details that will help:

10-1 you will find that it is an ignition issue.

Update
PISSED OFF!!
So i take all these comments and send the car back to Mccluskey who I believe is one of the best for sure! He replaces a few things that needed to be done (1) Coil unit $34.00 (1) MSD billet cd distributor $375.00 Get the car back and drive for 10 minutes ALL IS WELL! FASt FORWARD to Christmas Day! I take it out and it is drivin nice and I'm listening to some tunes and I pass the freeway on ramp thinking maybe NOT YET!.. 500 feet later it's dead AGAIN Look at my watch, it is almost exactly 40 minutes. sit on the side of the road, but walked and got some water that someone has said that ahd worked prior. NO HELp I nice guy comes walking down the sidewalk who seems to be a car guy. I ask him to look in the carb and see if fuel is even going in..... NOTHING! No gas, no smell, notning! Sit for 1.2 hours and nothing, Tow it home and here I ask ...... What THE HELL HAPPENED at 40 min that can STOp gas from flowing? At home I spray starter fluid into the car 5 times and still nothing.... Thoughts? |

Did you check the connections from the coil to the distributor? Did you check the connections both at the coil, and distributor harnesses? Did you have spark when you got home and tried to start the car? Have you checked the compression of all 8 cylinders? Only take three things for the car to run: Fuel Spark Compression Time to eliminate each one. Bill S. |

Thx Bill, I still have to ask the question from a NON-MECHANIC, that's me.. While trying to start the car there is No gas going into the carb bowls. Even with me standing on the gas pedal. What controls that simple action? appreciated |
Had something similar issue a few years back. Intermittent issue. Changed the coil...nope. Gave the carb a good cleaning and adjustment.....nope. Wound up being a broken wire to the magnetic pickup in the distributer. I was lucky to find it. I had the distributer out and was testing the ohm reading on the pickup. One test would be good. Jiggle the wire, no good. Very lucky to find it. MSD ignition.
