If you do replace the fuel pump, just make sure that it is a low pressure one that is in the psi range for your carb. There are a lot of ones out there designed for EFI and have way too much pressure for a carb to function.
Externally mounted fuel pumps are at risk of failure as they do not benefit from the fuel keeping them cool, like a submerged pump has.
