Remember that Peter Brock has a Chevy engine in his own Brock Coupe.

Carroll Shelby never put a Chevy in a Cobra, fact! But AC Cars Ltd. did on at least two cars from the factory, fact! My own experience when i sold my Contemporary with a Chevy ( 68 427 Hi PO block punched .30 over . 11 to 1 comp, Merlin large valve oval port heads. Edelbrock intake and Holley TBI injection going thru a Muncie 4spd) when I sold it was in pieces but I still got a premium price and in fact it started a bidding WAR because of the engine and I sold it for a lot more than I was asking. So this "Don't put a Chevy in a Cobra is just a load of BS!!!

To recap:
1. Shelby never put a Chevy in a Cobra. (And that really should be the end of it.....)
2. So there's not any part of you, no part at all, that thinks that just perhaps.....just maybe.....that you got good money for your car, because it's a Contemporary AND because it had a rare block with expensive top end parts on it? There's not one brain cell in your head that's kinda leaning that way? Do you think that maybe the fact that they took it all apart after they bought it that gives you a clue into all of this? Hmmm? Just maybe?
3. As for AC putting a Chevy in an Ace, good for them. Now, if you wanted to do a replica of a 1955 AC Ace with a 215ci all-aluminum Chevy engine, then you'd probably have something.
Still has nothing to do with a Cobra. (See point #1)
BTW, for those of you getting your feathers all ruffled up at my posts, I'm just poking fun. I honestly don't care what you put in your cars and just like seeing all the Chevy guys get all flustered.

I'm Sorry For All The Hate And Bad Feelings I Caused...
OP here, I caught the Mecum Cobra on TV while we were busy setting up the Xmas tree - the TV was basically background noise as we weren't paying too much attention to it, added the Mecum link so all could see and that there is a way to get part of the Cobra mystique on the cheap (<$20k). In hindsight, I should have titled it "A Good Deal On A Starter Cobra" and this thread would have probably died after about three more posts after my initial post. Being new to this group, I didn't realize how easy it is to get a rise from some members, I'll try not to let it happen again in the future.
Whatever engine you want to put in your Cobra or like is your choice, as Sly Stone sang "Different Strokes For Different Folks" and who is in a position to be the supreme judge what is "best"? If it makes you happy, that's all that matters. Tastes change with time, I'm happy with my SBF in my 427 S/C for now, my tastes may change for my next one to a BBF.

Mike,
Don't worry. People bait each other all the time here, especially if they get bored. The bast majority of it is light hearted. There are some pretty thick skins here. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, unless of course you were thinking of putting a prius engine in your cobra...

To all the kit car guys and former kit car guys squealing about what engine brand is "allowed" in someone else's kit car - how many original Cobras were built with fiberglass bodies again? (Asking for a friend)

I can't believe were bricking over a Cobra most of will never see. We have a couple Cobra's up here with Chevy's in them, they are just as welcome as Ford powered Cobras, we do ask them to leave the hoods down at shows (Just kidding). We have more important things to worry about like; Electric, all wheel drive, 1000HP Cobras that will blow the doors off everyone of our's. and they're quiet, to sneak up on us Chill folks, Cheers TommyRot.

Just some corrections (Blykins), when I sold my HotRod shaped like a COBRA it was in pieces because I was going to rebuild it ( I first put it together in 1981) but time never found the time! 2nd AC Cars Ltd. built at least two of their version of the Cobra at the factory with Chevy motors ! (not the ACE model) If you read the books by more AC Cars Ltd. perspective like Brian LaBan. And finally there is a market for guy's who love the Cobra but are CHEVY guy's and dont have a problem putting it in a car that has a body that was made by a company that makes boat hulls, and suspension from a Pinto or a Jaguar or a BMW or a corvette and a trans from who knows where.

You Ford guys can be a pretty neurotic bunch when it comes to Chevy engines in general, but I guarantee you that the Bowtie boys would have a $hit-fit over that. Especially the sideoiler - like "why??" when so much easy (and cheap) power is available with a big rat motor
I really don't give a rat's (or a mouse's) arse about being loyal to some company's branding - to me it really is kinda silly. I can like any car as long as it's good at what it does and looks good doing it.
What do y'all think of the new Z06 and the upcoming ZR-1?

Actually a big fan of GM vehicles, especially Pontiac.
Owned a ‘73 Corvette, my dad owns a Z06 and a ZL1 Camaro.
I wouldn’t put a Ford engine in one though and can’t understand the logic behind going to the junkyard, finding an engine, and trying to put it into whatever vehicle is in front of me.

I sure wish I had been aware of the animosity directed at GM powered “Cobras”. I would never have started the 6th GM based build for mine. Maybe if I had gotten to a car show in the last 24 years I could’ve made an “educated” choice.😂

This may not be the time to tell all of you, but Brent (EM-0785) & I bought a 2400LBS, 400HP GT that has a 70 LT-1 under the hood, Moon manifold with 4-45DCOE Weber's, that now shares space with our Cobras, and is a welcome addition. What with all the animosity toward the GM motors we may not tell you the great story that goes with car Cheers TommyRot.

I have absolutely zero animosity toward anyone, but it always makes me laugh when guys who put Chevy engines in their Cobra do it because, "Shelby approached GM about using a Chevy engine".
Maybe 'ole Shel thought about putting curb feelers on, a 5th wheel for pulling a horse trailer, or a snow plow on the front too.
I've asked this for 2 decades now: Do you want a replica or do you want a kit car?
