That is an interesting question Evan...
About the closest thing I can think of for an analogy are the wonderful Cunningham reproductions--another sports racer (albeit from a slightly earlier era) of limited production, but which did not have a significant replica industry before the family-authorized operation began. They command a large price, and sales have been very limited.
