Snakeeyes:
I think PDHse runs the postal service over there. You might want to ask him. that canvas bag might have been left over from WWII. |
I hope they don't want it back. I'm using it in my garage--
|
Snakeeyes, if its a canvas mailbag, rumour has it they were made by prisoners at her majesties pleasure ha ha.
|
See - that's where we go wrong here in the UK.
Our prisoners make mailbags. Yours make cars for Shelby. LOL |
CalMetal, There is a nice picture of Bob Johnson's #33, sitting on an open trailer in Road America in 1964, this one being CSX2189. There are two other pictures of a #33,also on a trailer, CSX2494, also Bob Johnson's car, at Road America one year later. This is the ex-#97 USRRC Shelby team car, I think. I don't think I've seen these pictures in print before. Do they sound familiar to you? There aren't any pictures of Bob driving the cars, however, atleast that I've found so far.
|
Thanks, Jim. CSX 2189 won A/Production at Elkhart Lake that year. I have a great pic of the car, in my portfolio of photos, showing the car on the the poll that year with Dan Gerber, I think. I will try and post it. Thanks again for getting me the information.
Sounds like a great book. |

Elkhart Lake photos
Great pictures. Will have to get the book.
Those pictures look like they were from the June Sprints that year, held on June 21, 1964. Others in the photo on the grid are Dan Gerber in 19, CSX 2138, and Jerry Hansen in 44, CSX2026. Dan went on to finish second, Jerry DNF'd. Too bad. Even though Jerry had a pretty famous car (it was the ex-Bob Johnson car that he drove the year before at the Watkins Glen USRRC and beat the Shelby Factory Team!), he never did well with it because he had a lot of DNF's with it and eventually sold it. In the background is a 904 Porsche with Bob Hagestad. He finished 3rd that day. The 904s were very impressive out here on the West Coast. Have seen them beat 427 AP cars when the 904s were driven by Milt Minter or Scooter Patrick!. Not bad for 2 liters against 7 liters. In the second picture of Bob, you can see Don Yenko's 57 BP Corvette. Don won BP that weekend. This is really great that Bob Johnson is getting coverage here. Many would say Miles was the greatest Cobra driver around, but my database shows Bob ran over 50 races in a Cobra and won 21 of them...that is one hell of a record! Bert Brown |
I just love to show off this picture.. Jim let me and my wife take a 200 mile spin last summer in his car... I have beeeen to the mountian top!!!!

Thanks, Ron for putting up the pics. If anyone has an idea where one could get the RA 1964 badge that is on Bob's car, let me know. I would love to put that back on CSX 2189.
Bob Johnson was a great driver and deserves a lot of recoginition. He later went on to drive Corvettes under the Johnson & Johnson team aka the Band Aid team. |
Having now received my copy of this book (thanks Amazon), and spent most of the weekend glued to it, I have to say, that at the price, it is a total bargain.

Delivery Update
I checked my backorder on Amazon and ship date is still April...
...so: On 2/13, I ordered the book from the publisher's UK web site. It arrived today (2/19) via mail. (That's quicker than UPS ground from Amazon!) ..so, you pay sticker price for the book this way. I'm at work, so I took a quick flip thru the book...it looks GREAT! Lots of new pictures.:D :D |
Okay, okay...
...I bit the bullet and ordered it from Haynes as well. It'll cost me $14 or so more, but I'm not the most patient person around.:3DSMILE:

NROTOXIN (Curtis), Where do you live? UK or US? I haven't heard from Amazon yet.
I'm sorry that the books have taken so long to get to the states via Amazon. It's kind of like waiting for Christmas when I was a kid! I didn't mean to get everyone pumped up and then make us wait forever. It will be worth it, I guarantee it. Rinsey has a unique take on many aspects of Cobra history. I appreciate his candid scepticism regarding some "history" and his casual manner of writing. It's like he's sitting there carrying on a coversation with you. I have it on good "author"ity that another Cobra book is already on the drawing boards to cover some other aspect of Cobras. Thanks for the kind comments from the early readers. I can't match the quality of those professional photographers. Perhaps I can get Hal Copple to shoot some with his Hasselblad sometime! |
