When do you insure your Cobra during the build?
I'm going to start building my A&C in May and I wanted to know when I should insure it, in case something happens that destroys the kit before it's done. It won't be built in my own garage.
Thanks!
Rob

Good luck insuring a pile of parts. Thats what my insurance company called it. They would only insure it after it was titled. I built mine at home so if I had a fire it was covered under my home owners policy. Jim

Home Owners Insurance
A typical Home Owners Policy DOES NOT cover licensable vehicles!
I'd check with your agent on this. As far as I remember the only
things vehicular covered were riding lawn mowers and snow mobiles, but snow mobiles needed a rider to be covered.

Rob,
Art is correct. I called my State Farm agent when I was ready to insure the car which had been in my gagage for a while. State Farm has my other cars and my house insurance. In addition to not wanting to insure the running car, she made of point of telling me that the car was not insured under homeowners and in fact it's specifically excluded. She even helpfully highlighted the pertinent details and mailed them to me. I thought I had been insured the whole time.

You won't get.............
automobile Insurance coverage until the car is built and titled. They won't insure a bunch of parts. As far as coverage under your home owners or some other policy, better check with the Insurance agent.

While I was building my A&C and had the chassis, engine and drivetrain completed I wanted to truck it up to A&C and fit the body on. At that point, I had the car titled. I contacted several companies and Hagarty was the only one I found that would insure my chassis setup. Subsequently Hagarty stopped insuring Cobras last year and I am now with another company.
So maybe it can still be done but you may have to call ALOT of companies before you find one.

I checked with my State Farm agent before the body/chassis was delivered and ended up taking out a separate personal articles policy for coverage during the build. It costs about $1 per month per $1000 of coverage. Well worth it, IMHO.
In our conversation, found out he is a street rodder and familiar with insuring specialty vehicles. I hope that helps when the time comes.

Same here. Check with your insurance co to be sure, and don't assume that it's the same for every policy.
Homeowners, or homeowners with a personal effects floater until car is titled. Once it becomes legally an automobile, it can be insured as one.

My insurance agent told me as long as I was building my car and it was not titled as a vevicle it was covered under my garage "contents"clause. I did need to have receipts to prove it was part of my contents. I did raise my garage "contents value to make sure I had ample coverage.
