racing windshields

HEY GUYS....WHERE CAN I GET A RACING WINDSHIELD SUCH AS USED ON THE 65 COMPETITION CARS. I THINK ALSO LIKE CAL'S CAR AND ALSO I THINK BRENT HAS ONE ON HIS NOW. CRANKY TOO?

JAY

RACER X #99 02-03-2003 03:44 PM

Jay,
I got mine from Cobra Restorers in GA.

It is very brittle and will crack if you look at it the wrong way.
If you can find one made out of Lexan that would be better.

Jay,

I have one that I purchased from Cobra Restorer's. I ended up making one that better suited me. It has never been mounted. If interested send me email.

I have the one from Cobra Restorers, and yes, it is very brittle. I ended up making a unique aluminum base for it (Jay, mail me this weekend, and I'll try to get pictures this coming weekend if you're interested) so that I could mount it and remove it easily and not put holes in front of where the windshield would normally be so I can make the switch in under a half hour. Worked out pretty well actually, and I love the look.

Crack in Cobra Restorers

Yes they crack but it is all in the installation. I had mine on and off more than a few times in the fitting and it never cracked.
Even after 2000 track miles..

I can guide any of you through it..

Here's one pic I have now which shows some of the work I did...

The front few nuts/bolts are shorty's and just mount the plastic shield to the stiff alumunim piece. All other attachments are actually behind the line where the full shield goes, so I didn't actually mess up the paint by putting holes where they would be visible when the full shield is on.

GENTLEMEN

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Here's me on the highway last year with the racing screen on.

How tall is that? Thickness?

I'll make some out of lexan, if you guys want. Any particular features? How thick would you want them?

I need to make a couple for around here anyway. Any I make right now will be one off, so this is your chance for custom windshields. If anybody wants a lexan version of a cracked plastic one, send me the broken one. Or send me some specs. I've been itching to do this for a while, and now I have an excuse.

windscreen

Steve - I have what I believe is an original windscreen that is cracked right through the middle, can you duplicate it exactly, including same material, thickness, etc? Do I get the first one free for letting this be used as a pattern?

ac andy 02-21-2003 04:01 PM

Steve, I would be interested in purshasing one if you end up making them. I dont have a pattern so I would be happy with one that you can get off someone else. Email me if you want.

Andy.

Send that broken baby over. I can't make them for free, but I promise you'll be very happy at your price.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of copying Cobra Restorer's windshield, by the way. I'll just make copies of originals, or somebody's fresh new design.

OK, anybody who wants a lexan windscreen, please email me: steve@kirkhammotorsports.com and I'll keep you posted on progress and pricing.

On a slight tangent, anybody notice the current Kirkham 427 on eBay actually has a windshield already installed? DOT & Europe approved and everything.

Hey.....

......................why is George Costanza driving Brent's car?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Rick:confused:

Cal Metal 02-21-2003 06:29 PM

If it helps at all, guys, the thickness of the shield on CSX 2189 is 1/8 inch.

prveqty 02-21-2003 06:38 PM

thickness

Cal - The 289 windscreens were different than most 427's, but having a thickness to verify is certainly valuable. The 289 usually had the reinforcement around the bottom, whereas the "traditional" 427 screen was solid clear (note, there were a couple or few very early comp 427 cars that left SA or were outfitted with the 289 style reinforced screen). I just checked my original 427 screen and it's .133"-.139" thick, depending on where you measure it.

Cal Metal 02-21-2003 08:12 PM

You are correct. Mind does have the reinforcement around the bottom--actually painted to reflect the color and stripe.

Steve Kirkham 02-22-2003 10:44 AM

Well, I've been studying up on care, feeding and birthing of lexan.

Anybody have a clue why the aluminum strip vanished when the windscreen went to the big blocks? Just figured they didn't need them after all, perhaps?

Prveqty, I accept your offer -- forget the discount. You'll get a free clone in return for providing the original DNA sample. Thanks.

Brent Mills 02-22-2003 10:53 AM

Oh man, thanks Rick! :D

I was kinda dissapointed because I could have sworn the cobra restorers catalog showed the reinforcement. I would prefer something along those lines.

Steve Kirkham 02-22-2003 11:48 AM

Guys,

Thanks for the measurements; I really appreciate the info. I've got an original 427 screen here that's 1/8 inch. It's cracked in two as well. No reinforcement strip, just clear plastic.

prveqty 02-22-2003 02:41 PM

windscreen

Steve - I'll send mine out Monday and include some 60's photos. I assume eliminating the reinforcement strip saved cost after they figured out how to mold it with the bottom lip.
