CSX2196 - the Flip-Top (Turd) was originally built with an alum 390.

IMHO the answer to this question has to be an AC. They are still built in very small numbers using the original bucks. I have just posted a picture of one in the Gallery. Take a look and tell me if any of the Kirkhams etc. really capture the essence of the car in the way this one does. The bad news is that they cost $200K plus.

Unless the AC company has recently been bought by someone with a little good taste the Cobra they make may have the least accurate interior ever.

Yes they made(make) perfect bodies but the leather tuck and rolled cockpit looks like something you might see in a Rolls complete with contrasting pipeing.%/

If we are just talking about the body that's a different matter, but whole car :rolleyes:

I have just posted a picture of the interior of my AC. Can't see any piping or rolled edges. They build to customer specification and some people do seem to like the Rolls Royce look. Mine has some items that are needed to meet safety laws in the UK but if you build to US spec everything can be exactly original - including a steering wheel on the wrong side.

I guess The AC cars I've seen were all "decked out" in cowhide.
Those cars in your gallery were pretty much perfect 427s even had the right sidepipes which I think are illegal in the UK for street use (right?)Anyway.... nice job.

Side pipes are not illegal but many other items that you see on the 427 are - especially the jack points. The authorities here are particularly strict on making sure that there a no projections on the inside or outside of the car that could injure passengers or pedestrians. It makes building a really accurate car an impossibility. I much prefer the more relaxed approach in the US and if I come to live there again will build a Kirkham ( or will it be one of the others that this thread is so concerned with?) just to take advantage of it. The challenge then will be to smuggle it back to the UK afterwards.

gets slandered on this website, although the moderator after a while goes in after the fact and deletes some of the most outrageous examples. You have a really stunning car inside and out.

It's more the attitude that one's car is vastly superior that gets the attention of some here.

Thanks for the kind words and I'm pleased to have added more evidence on another contender to the controversy. In my view all the alloy bodied Cobras are fantastic machines.
I guess once people go to the trouble of moving beyond pouring plastic into a mold they tend to get the other things right as well.
By the way I agree that an exception to this was in some of the output from AC in recent years. They were not always in the best possible taste. They agree too and seemed to be genuinely pleased to build mine to a spec. that was as close as legally possible to what I wanted. Since then (2001) there has been another change of owner and they appear to be getting back to their roots once again. Last time I was there they were building a perfect replica of an FIA complete with leaf spring etc. Very tempting but again not legally useable on British roads. Oh to be in the land of the free!

AC has been in ( semi, sorta, kinda) continuous Cobra production from day one. Criticizing them for their renditions of "the modern Cobra" is like ragging on Chevy for not keeping the Corvette identical to the first model ever built or Ford for evolving the '64 Mustang over the years. They don't consider their product to be a "replica" as much as a continuation of the original model. Arguably they at least can claim the use of the original bucks and jigs, etc and did not need to resort to bogus declarations of having leftover chassis from the original cars like our hero did a little while back when he tried to hop back on the bandwagon he abandoned years before. AC's are every bit as real a Cobra as anything sold by SAI - they are Cobras but not SHELBY Cobras. Also, don't confuse AC's "new wave" models (which don't appeal to me either) with the handmade aluminum bodied works of art still available from them which are almost unchanged from the original 60's models. They may not legally be able to call them Cobras thanks to Chilli Willi and Ford, but they are the closest thing out there to a Real Cobra short of the originals. I love Ol' Shel for what he accomplished, but I'm not too fond of some of his methods (even back then) or what he has become.
