Question Your 5 quick ways to tell a replica from an original ??

Here's what I am looking for.

What are your top 5 ways to tell a replica from an
original when you approach the car???

Here are mine:
#1 wheels
#2 roll bar
#3 stance
#4 dash
#5 steering column

Let me know.

Cheers,
wicked fast

If you can walk up to it, it isnt an original..........other wise the best way to tell will be the driver door sitting a 1/4" or so high at the jamb from frame twist, also if the body dosnt look that straight,

If it hasn't been restored the body will not be straight. There will be ripples and such in it and as KobraKarl said, frame twist did some strange things to doors. Also the front fenders will not be exactly the same in width unless they have been corrected. If it is a 260/289 car it will have the transverse leaf spring in the front.

forward braced roll bar is incorrect for 427 S/C as are the chrome sidepipes.
I think CS's twin paxton was one of the very few w/chrome s-pipes.

So if it were real its been "messed with" by someone. The rear fenders also don't look quite right but as mentioned most of the real cars have been rebuilt several times.

BC,

Hard for me to tell from that picture. I would almost guess it is real but just don't know for sure. So many changes have been made to the originals over the years that it is hard to really tell. I normally ask the owner if he is around and will let me look at the vin # and take a close look at the rest of the car.

1. Knock sharply with your knuckles on the top of the front fender, listening for metallic resonance.
2. Ask, "..have you ever been to Utah?"
3. Ask, "...have you ever been to Vegas?
4. Get "NO" for an answer to #2 and #3
5. Find yourself running for your life, being chased by a red-faced man, very out of shape.

...it's an original.

absolutely...
..in fact, I was just "scanning the files" the other night.
It is disturbingly amazing just how many street cars have been "S/C-ized" with pipes and stripes, scoop and roll bars over the years.
A bit of a shame, since the street car is really elegant.

The car shown above even has been changed to rectangular taillights, but still has a street dash.

It's is a shame. Take an original street car and turn it into uh..a non-original S/C .

Ron,

I got to agree....... if I had a chance to buy an s/c conversion or a street original I would take the street car.

Darn, you are good.

Did I leave a picture of it posted somewhere!!!
Like the Nick Nero award!!!

Before Nick passed away last year,
he drove the car with our Cobra club in Kansas City.
This picture is from an open track event.

Cheers,
wicked fast

Default CSX3287

...I have always really liked the looks, the stance, the maturity of Nick's car.

Here is a rear and interior shot, with the top down...

BTW...back to your original question..usually (but not always), the gas cap is a dead giveaway... hardly ever see a replica with this style cap. Even the street cars that have been "S/C-ized" rarely go the extra metal work to french the big LeMans filler cap...
...so it's a good litmus test!

Ron,
I love the tip on the LeMans gas cap and the metal frenching around it.
Now the next question. Do the new glass CSX4XXX and Kirkhams or Shelby alum. CSX's have the original style caps, or are the frenched?
