				Spare Tire

A silly thought came to me the other day, where do the Cobra guys put a spare tire? I understand that Cobras and spare tires don't necessarly go together, however, if I were making a lengthly trip and had a flat, I would not want to leave it alongside a highway while I was scouting out a new tire. I am assuming that most trunks are to small for a spare.

Fix flat and small air pump.
When was the last time you had a flat in a well maintained car?

!980's camaro, firebird had a4 3/4 bolt pattern inflatable spare. Not sure if fords did for the 4 1/2 bolt pattern. Even a well maintained car can hit road garbage.

I keep a can of "fix-a-flat" or whatever the name is...... you know the stuff that seals the hole and re-inflates the tire. I also have a small "plug" repair kit to close up puncture wounds should I need to go that route.
Thankfully, I've never had to use either........ but you know what will happen if I leave this stuff at home
- Jim -

Oh, and never leave home without that cell phone.....

				spare tire size

If you do go the spare route, I beleive that you need to be careful of the size. I don't think that a posi rear deals well with different size tires for very long. Help me on this one folks!
I go the AAA and cell phone route. I think that some of that stuff you put in the tire in case of a puncture would be a good idea. After that some fix-a-flat, plug kit, portable compresser would be nice. But then you may also need a jack and wrench. No room left for favorite drink!

I think they are a few things to deal with that make fix a flat and a compressor the best way to go. Even if you can get a donut spare to fit in trunk, what do you do with the big flat tire. Put it in the passenger seat or trunk with a bungee cord to hold trunk lid. Not too many jacks will fit under my car either ( 4.5" clear to frame with all 4 tires inflated) Not sure how low it would get with a flat.

				Here's my plan...

I have a spare wheel and tire ready in the garage.. (one front, one rear) so before any long road trip, I will slap a jack under each wheel, and inspect the tire.. any metal found embedded, and I will just swap that wheel/tire out.

On the road a can or two of "fix-a-flat" and a small compressor (maybe the plug repair kit too) should do the trick.

Then there's AAA

You should not need a spare with the above. It's just something to clutter up your tiny trunk.

I had ONSTAR installed in my car. The button is hidden behind the dash and I had a custom outlet made so that all I do is plug the hands free earpiece and mic from my cell phone into it (also mounted behind the dash) and push the button. Also, ONSTAR can track my car if it is ever stolen (G*D forbid).

Sorry, I couldn't resist, JUST KIDDING !!! But it's a damn good idea. I really like knowing I have ONSTAR in my Yukon, and have thought about getting it put in my SPF; but I just don't drive it enough. You guys that use your Cobras as daily drivers might want to think about it...

I do have a spare fuel pump, but I don't bother with a spare tire anymore. I have had flats on three rallys. The first one was up in Sequoia National Park about ten years ago. My Micky Thompson's had almost no tread left and after running for four hours, two of them were going down. It took four cans of flat fixer to finish the rally (my friends gave me a couple).
The second time was on the Angeles Crest Road. I saw the sharp little rock in the road. It was in the middle of a sweeping curve, but I was going too fast to alter my course enough to miss it. The right rear just clipped it. I was hoping that the tire was OK, but at the next checkpoint, as we slowly rolled along, we could hear the psst, psst, psst. It was in the sidewall, too. One can of fix-a-flat got us to the end of the rally and home.

The third time was last year on the Eureka National TSD Rally near Landcaster. I was on my brand new Toyos and I ran over something that put a one-inch gash in the inside sidewall of the right front. It took two cans to finish the rally and two more to get home. That stuff is great, I should buy it by the case!

I also carry tire plugs, but so far they have stayed in the trunk.
