One thing for sure, nobody was thinking like this in the 60's. They were just TRYING to sell the them and move on to whatever came next.
,,,,will they still be "Shelbys" when Carol passes on? Whats in a name anyway? There still Ferraris, there still Porsches. Maybe it won't make a difference. I expect at least a "temporary" jump in price across the board. But I suspect the market prices will stabilize in a short time and DROP on some models following that. The BIG winners in the end will be those cars that are really "accurate" in their details. Glass cars will still sell fine, but will clearly be an "also ran". Boltes car and other "non Kirkham" metal cars are the tough call here. Will they be extra ordinary because of their even more rare position? Early cars worth more than late cars? Ernie |
An aluminum block in a CSX 4000 Shelby Cobra, rather than the Holly Grail The Magnificent The One and Only Iron 427 Side Oiler?
You have got to be kidding, right? TURK Why would anyone put a replica engine in a Real Cobra when for a few more dollars a Real engine can be had? Allan, I don't know about you. Aluminum makes for a nice patio door...not an engine. that is why they put steel liners in them cylinders. TURK |
Balls.
Modern rendition of the extreme 60's sportracer deserves the modern rendition of the thumping motor. |
Allan: I don't think you could be more wrong. No insult intended.
The CSX's today are Cobras just as the CSX in the 60's were Cobras. Today Cobras leave SAI as a shell in roller form, no details except paint. If you want a component car built its shiped chasis and unfinished glass body with all parts to be assembled by the dealer. Today SAI does not and can not finish or build the car. The dealers do. Thats one difference in the manufacturing process when compared to the 60's aside from the supplier of the chasis and body. The original Cobra's were fitted with FE's by Shelby. In the 60's they left SAI as completed cars with specific hardware and details depending on the model. My bet is that the closer to original spec the new Cobra is built, ie. the closer it leaves the dealer to the way it left the the Ford dealers in the 60's my bet is that the more desirable it will be. Especially since good 427SO blocks are very rare now a days. If you want a "Cobra" there is a very clear receipe to follow. Some variants in ingrediants depending on model but the list is clear. Today SAI doesn't fit the car with anything or finish it. They can't due to EPA and DOT regulations. Show me one car that left SAI with an a Shelby aluminum engine installed and running and shipped to the dealer with details different than in the 60's. Please. I'd love to know. In the end I think their will not be much difference in value between an aluminum block CSX and a CSX with original iron. It will depend on what the buyers are looking for at that time. Its all speculation. I didn't buy my car for investment or resale. I bought it to enjoy it. I'm confident that it will hold its value well if not increase in value in the years to come though. I wouldn't change my original 427SO built to original specs for an aluminum block 427. No way. I wanted the original REAL power plant that powered these beasts back in their hay day powering my baby. |
Steve,
Just curious. How much did you spend on ORIGINAL parts for 4027? How about mods to the 4000 body? |
Captain
I once calculated all in dollars to 4027 at $85,000 after all the trading of suspension parts and selling the original parts. If we quickly break it down to round numbers;
$40,000 roller $15,000 Motor & toploader $6,000 HRE labor w Interior $8,500 Paint That's $69,500 so around $15,000 was spent on fluff. |

I agree with what Brett said.
I don't think he sees his car/Cobra as a "kit car" or competing with "kit car replicas". In fact he sued the kit car companies claiming they pirated his trade dress, logo, Cobra name etc.. He clearly wanted to put the kit cars out of the business of "counterfiting" his Cobra. |
Evan,
I like my AC better than any other Cobra. I like the quirkiness of English craftsmanship. I like the old British leather sportscar smell of the interior. I have vintage raced it many times even though I think it drives like crap on a track , but I still like it. It is the slowest car I have, but it scares me silly. Evan, let's race. That's a challenge. CSX 4027 bring your WC car to our track event June 28-29, July 1-2(Savannah Ga) . We will have quite a few there and you would be welcome. E-mail for specifics. That's an invitation |
welll back to the original post about the car on ebay... what do ya think it will bring... very little action on it.. think someone can steal it??? :3DSMILE:

What I don't understand is, how can KMP and SAI be selling new cars like hot cakes, when a new KMP goes unsold at $71K and an SAI with no waiting is only reaching $90k. I guess they claim things are going great guns, but it seems like a disconnect to me. Kind of like when internet commerce stocks were going through the roof, but prices of REIT's that specialize in strip mall shopping centers were still strong. Unless society starts buying everything in duplicate, somethings got to give eventually.... |
I'd like to see it stay at $90k :3DSMILE:

It seems...
The new buyer get stars in his eyes when building his dream. They usually do it exactly as they pictured it but nonetheless with their own personal touches. The resale buyer is also looking for the car he always pictured but when you buy a good used Cobra you make compromises for other things the car might not have that you would have wanted. Then the buyer wants to buy it at a discount anticipating the cost of the changes.
I don't understand why some trade so low or not at all. |
Brett & Evan,
Go back to the articles during 1997 & 1998. He was to say the least..."Pissed Off" at the Kit Car companies that wouldn't donate to his Heart Fund for Children. After selling several of his Continuation cars, the idea was tossed around to build a Fiberglass reproduction of his car to keep costs down, and compete against the Kit Car companies. If you wanted an aluminum shell, they were asking an additional $35K at the time. Evan...your slipping! I thought you bought all this info from Steve? Guess Steve left a few things out! :3DSMILE: - Bill - |

Out of all the companies out there copying the Cobra, SAI is the only one who tried to represent their product as something that it's not. And before y'all start flamming me, let me make sure I'm clear here. I'm refering to the continuation car fraud, not the CSX4000 series. Even Shelby refers to this product as a "kit" which, of course, it is. :) |

Bill, Are you insinuating that I be the only Cobra Info guy that is paid a Retainer by an Attorney?:JEKYLHYDE |
