I could be wrong but as memory serves me I think the 1963 -65 Galaxie 500 XL had a side oiler as well as one of the big Mercurys'. Also, there was a 64 Fairlane 500 Thunderbolt.

I am fairly sure the Thunderbolts came with the top oiler - didn't the s/o only come out in '65?

Yes, Galaxies and the rest from the '63 to March '65 time period used CO. It is interesting to note that the the HR design came and went prior to SO's. MR design came out around the time SO block was introduced.
Chronology: LR, HR, SOHC, MR and TP.
Cars: '67 Fairlane, I believe had about 120 427 cars produced, which were of course SO's. Drawing a blank on others--got to get back to work.

If you come across any old Ford with a factory installed 427 in it, S/O or otherwise, you may be better off leaving the car as is and not stealing the engine from it (if that is your intention). I suspect those will be worth more (unmolested) than your replica Cobra is in a few more years.

Other Fords w/ 427 SO
There are those times when my mind wanders, times I feel that my memory banks have been overwritten and times I am just plain wrong, but as I recall the '64 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt had the 428 engine.
A similar thought is coming forth on the Cougar that Shelby toyed with. I think it is distinguished by having a horrizontal bar over the headlight door.
Another thought just popped up. Was the "R code" the designation for the 427 SO? Didn't all 427's become SO after the development of the eingine?
There is a '65 Falcon Sprint convertrible that has a 427 in it and is displayed at several shows here in the Central Coast of California.
All indications on the display information lead one to believe that it is an original car.
I have not had the opportunity to discuss that with the owner.

CRZ, T-Bolts had factory 427 HR. 428 not introduced until '66.
R-code was simply a way to designate (2) four barrels (8V) as opposed to say a "W" (4V 427 in '66 and '67).

I agree with Bill the T-bolts had the 427 HR with 8V (2-4). After the 63 1/2 Galaxies were introduced and got the first 427 8V low rise and high rise engines they were available in the other galaxy models. Early 63's had 406's 4V and I think 3-2's. The R designation was in that years serial number to designate the 427 8V. I think the 427 4V was a Q engine. I had a 63 1/2 Galaxy XL with the R engine. I think ford kept those codes for a few years at least. I had the pleasure of watching Larson Ford race the TBolt at Dover drag strip in NY. It was quite a car. I ran in the low 12s with mine it was a Holman Moody blue print with not so stock a cam. More info on Gessford Machines web site http://www.gessford.com/images/FordMuscleStory.htm
Some info from that page I quote “All 427 blocks are cast from high strength alloy iron with a 4.23 bore. Most 1963 64 blocks were identical to the 390 high-performance and many 406 blocks in that they had beefy lower end webbing, 2 bolt main caps, large oil galleries and a preasure relief valve near the rear top center. Some 63-64 blocks used “cross bolt mains” ussualy 427-8v low riser and all 427 high riser engines. All 65-66-67 blocks were side oilers, just like the 427 SOHC, and used cross bolt mains. The side oiler was also used in 1968, but oil galleries to the lifters because this engine used a hydraulic cam.”

The only cars that came off the Ford factory production line with a side oiler block are late '65 Galaxies ( very, very rare), '66 and '67 Fairlanes, and Mercury Comet/Cyclones, and the '67 and very early '68 GTE Cougars. Out of these rare cars, only the late '65 Galaxies, '66 and '67 Fairlanes and Comet/Cyclones had medium riser heads. We are probably talking less than 200 cars total.
One area of confusion, and I think where a lot of misinformation started was from the early '68 sales brochures and repair manuals show the 427 as an option available in Torinos and Mustangs. In reality, 427 option was never made availabe in '68,
The 428 CJ replaced it as the top engine for that year.
Aside from some factory test mules, factory race cars built by Holman-Moody, and the dealer installed 427 swaps the engine never made it into production cars. I kinda don't really count the Cobra in this tally because the Cobra was not built by Ford, they just sold engines to an outside vendor/builder, CS.
HTH,
Mike
