Shell Valley Hood Clearance With 351W
Has anyone ran into any problems with fitting a 351W w/ single plane intake under the standard hood on a Shell Valley car? I haven't tried to fit mine in yet, but some quick measurements convince me that it won't fit. Maybe I'm measuring from the wrong spot...has anyone else accomplished this? I really don't wanna go to a hood with a raised scoop.

hood
i went with a motor from the engine factory, with the oval cobra air cleaner, and it fits by the skin of my teeth.......had to cut the air cleaner bolt a lil so it would fit.........looks kinda cool how the air cleaner fits right in the scoop though!

Well I can't really change my intake since the motor is already built...I'm gonna have to go with the single plane. I would hate to lose horsepower anyway...

Hi blykins
I can relate to your problem,,but I think you will be ok,my sv has a 427 high rise,,when I picked it up the air cleaners were in the trunk,,I was sternly told they wouldnt go on the car without cutting the hood,,the high rise is TALL. I was ready to call Jim Dove and order a new med riser top, since I hate the taller scoops, but I found the problem isnt in the scoop area, but to the rear,by cutting the rear hood frame a few inches ,and using a disc grinder {very carefully} to thin the area behind the scoop which is very thick, then since I am using the stellings breathers I clipped one roll of little circles off the mesh, now my hood fits fine and it all looks normal,,I would put on the hood and rub hand cleaner or tooth paste on top of the air cleaner to see where it hits,it may suprise you as to where the problem actually is.good luck,,Tk

Don't know if this will help but, I have a Midstates and as you know it is very similar to a Shell Valley. I have a stroked windsor and a Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake topped with a Holley 750 double pumper. The Midstates hood has a slightly smaller scoop but the air cleaner fits nicely into the scoop, and yes it does look kind of cool when you look into the scoop and see a K&N air cleaner. There is also room for the air cleaner as the engine torque moves the engine slightly. hope this helps, Flatliner

I ran into the same thing on my SV. I have the 392 stroker with a rpm air gap manifold. It did have victor jr. but changed due to the flat plane. I have a 750 Demon carb with a 2" high air cleaner with the extreme top for air flow.I had SV make me a lowered motor mount which dropped the motor almost 2" . I also cut my scoop off and put a pop rivit scoop on top . Have about 1" clearance under the hood with that set up. If you need any more help e-mail me at home pnrstaion@aol.com

I ran into the same problem with my 351W installation. I had to cut the motor mount perches and weld them back in slightly lower in order to run the Performer intake and the oval air cleaner. It was 9 years ago, so my memory might be foggy, but as I recall, I had to gain just over an inch to make it work.
