Clutch/ spigot bearing problem?
Further to my earlier post about leaving out the spigot bearing on the back of the crankshaft (WHAT A MUPPET), I took the engine out (again) and installed a new spigot bearing in the back of the crankshaft, put the engoine back in again but now I seem to have a vibration problem. It goes away with the clutch depressed, but when I let up the clutch (driving in gear or in neutral) I get a vibration. If I depress the clutch it goes away but when I let it up it can be better ot worse, theres no telling. If I hadn't put the spigot bearing in I would have said that its the clutch not lining up when it's clamped to the flywheel but after I've put the bearing in?????
Its a ford 302 with a toploader gearbox. I cjhecked that it fitted on the gearbox input shaft so surely it should be OK?
Help...I'm about to drive the damn thing into a lake I'm so pi**ed off with it.

I would suggest checking that the bellhousing to transmission runout is within spec. If it is not, the syptoms are similar to what you are experiencing. The trans has to come out to perform this procedure............Sorry
Good luck

Sounds like you are off balance. You may have to go back and make sure you have:
a) all of the bolts and of the same length and weight ( sounds excessive, but I've done it )
b) The balance lines match. If you had someone balance the engine with the flywheel, they may have put two lines to match when installing the flywheel.
c) See if the bearing you put in is NOT out-of-round.
Those should cover most of a babance problem based on what you have described.

Thanks guys,
The engine hasn't been balanced so I'm not expecting it to be over-smooth but my concern is that sometimes it's a smooth as silk and at others it feels like it's going to shake itself apart. its just as if the clutch is being clamped off-centre when I release the pedal.
the flywheel bolts are all the same (ARP)
The spigot bearing is brand new and was perfect when I put it in
Sorry, I don't understand bellhousing to transmission runout, could you explain for a simpleton like me please...

An imaginary line through the center of the input shaft through the center of the hole in the bellhosing and into the center of the crankshaft. The mounting of the bellhousing to the engine block is adjusted with offset dowels. Do a search on this site as it has been discussed at length earlier.

Simon, the nature of your problem is a puzzler... since the vibration is variable with you giving the same input , I would say you must have a loose or broken part.......maybe your disc/input shaft spline is sloppy...when you reinstalled your engine did you have exess difficulty engaging the tranny?

Karl,
No that's what I don't understand,
Everything seemed fine when I put it all back together.
