Shelby Cars From South Africa

Just spoke to a Shelby Cobra dealer from the races in Laguna Seca this morning and it seems as if this indeed is a series of cars being built in South Africa for Shelby as a turnke minus for $39,995.00. I wonder who could be the factory in South Africa. Any ideas?

What then happens to the terms,"Original" and "Real Shelby's"? Will they get a new term like "Real Shelby Replicas?". Seems like quite a few cars coming out of South Africa Manufacturers could share the same name.

I wonder. hmmm!

Will call Paul on Tuesday when I get back from PA to find out the scoop........

I've always thought that if Shelby wanted to, they could put almost everyone else out of business while making a pile of money. Not in the courtroom, but in the marketplace! Did they finally wake up? It will be interesting to see the response from the public after they pissed-off a lot of folks with their lawsuits, etc.

There is no mystery, nor 'new' news here.. if this is indeed the South African product.

CS talked about it at the dinner at SAAC in May... with a hint that it would roll out "in about three months"... which is now.

CAV, in South Africa, has had a cross-manufacturing/marketing deal with SAI that was announced in April, headlined with CS getting a CAV GT for himself.

From the CAV press release:

"...In 1997, production of the CSX 4000, the 427S/C component units, began in Las Vegas. With the exception of a fibre glass body, they followed the original design right down to the last rivet.
In late 1998, Shelby took the first order for the 289 FIA CSX 7000 component units, and introduced the roller unit, which was simply a more completed assembled unit, in both 427 and 289.

Presently only the 427S/C is being manufactured by CAV, with shipment commencing in May 2003."

However, if the book price is indeed $39K (and this is not a onesy-twosy intro deal)... they are gonna sell more than a few of these!:MECOOL:

Hi Guys just spoke to Paul. It is in fact the new product from Shelby American and built in So. Africa. Paul says that the only differance that he is aware of is the upper control arms on the rear are aluminum and the front ball joints are heavier!
Paul also states that this is at cost and will only be available for four (4) weeks. Even the dealers are in awe at this offering!
Paul also says to call him now if interested. 609-744-2813. Paul is always available to answer questions.
Personally I think that is a super opportunity to get into a Real Shelby Cobra at a very affordable price!
Sal Gerace.

??

I can't wait to see the Halibrand Tires and Windhield. The ad appears to be written by a true COBRA GUY?:JEKYLHYDE

Tom T. 08-16-2003 05:15 PM

Steve,

The nice thing about the Halibrand tires is the way they throw sparks at night, sort of like a 4th of July sparkler. And I thought you KNEW about these cars!

It sure looks like if Shelby decides to "hookup" with a company, their car is all of a sudden a "Shelby Cobra". Does this mean that if they later hookup with ERA, Midstates, FFR, or any other company that these cars now become "Shelby Cobra's"? I thought all of the "counterfeit" Cobra's were dangerous and that it was terrible that they were brought from South Africa. Why all of a sudden can CAV change a couple of items and have a "real" Shelby Cobra? I guess it's now okey for these cars to come from South Africa?

The way I see it, there is nothing worse than someone putting down someones way of doing things and their product, only to then do the same and it is suddenly "alright". It sure looks like Shelby is making the CAV Shelby Cobra, just another "replica"...

Excaliber 08-17-2003 11:04 AM

No problem for me understanding the "logic" here with what is and what isn't a real Shelby.

Indeed IF C.S. did "hook up" with who ever it WOULD be a Shelby Cobra. Approved by, authorized by, legally entitled by Carol Shelby. It's as much about a "legal" issue as anything else.

Shelby would not "hook up" with just anybody to build a Cobra. You can bet this new one IS going to be a quality car.

Specialk 08-17-2003 11:42 AM

Bandit,

CAV did not previously produce a Cobra. The CAV produced Shelby Cobra was developed with extensive input by Shelby Automobiles. :)

BANDIT 1 08-17-2003 11:50 AM

SpecialK:

I was under the impression that CAV had been working on a Cobra replica when they were contacted by SIA about making "Shelby Cobra's".

Woodz428 08-17-2003 12:07 PM

Well if the picture posted on e-bay is an example, it will hold the same value as the Chrysler"quality" Shelby's. But a free market import assembled buy employed workers surely can't have the value of car assembled by an american prison work force .

CSX 4039 08-17-2003 01:24 PM

I think I'm gonna be sick:CRY:

CSX 4027 08-17-2003 02:34 PM

CAV

CAV never sold a Cobra before the Shelby deal so it will always go down in history as yet another subcontracter hired to produce an original Shelby CSX car. Thebuyers 50 years from now will recognize the progression from
Early Las Vegas Glass
to
Las Vegas chassis custom US hand made aluminum
to
Kirkham CSX Poland Aluminum
to
CAV South Africa Glass

****Hey!!!
I bet a lot of you have Ford trucks with major parts made in Mexico
Isn't it still a ford?

Dan Semko 08-17-2003 03:29 PM

Bill,
I'm surprised that Evan didn't receive his "special coupon" before the new Shelby Sales launch. I know that Turk and I BOTH might use ours for brake upgrades or the new top.;)
