They are very different colors. GM may have called different colors by the same name in different lines. The Corvette laguna blue is very dark, like a guardsman blue, but with lots of metalic.
I never liked the color much until I acquired a car in this color.
With goldline tires and a tan top it looked great.

AFTER LOOKING AT BOTH PAINT CHIPS ( 1964 GUARDSMAN BLUE AND THE 1966 SAPPHIRE BLUE ) THEY LOOK IDENTICAL ,HOWEVER THE PAINT MIX FORMULAS ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT. UNLESS TWO CARS WERE SIDE BY SIDE YOU PROBABLY COULD NOT TELL ANY DIFFERENCE.

Sorry for the delay....moved some stuff around in my four-car, and couldnt find my touch-up can. Here are the numbers: DAR 18648 Delstar acrylic enamel Majestic Blue. This is kind of a "denim" blue, with a bit of gray tint, and a little green tint. It is definitely blue, but when the Cobra is parked next to a true blue car, my Cobra changes color a little bit. I hope to have some photos posted before too long, with my friends digital camera.

Default The color blue on CSX 3111

At the risk of pouring gasoline on the fire - I was down at the shop in San Diego this morning where 3111 and a USRRC 289 Cobra are displayed, and brought with me my color chips. While the 289 car was definitely a match to the Guardsman blue chip(s), 3111 is neither Guardsman nor Viking nor Sapphire, at least not according to either the Martin-Senour (NAPA) or Sherwin-Williams books. The color is a shade lighter than the Guardsman, but not as light as Viking nor as intense as Sapphire. What it looks like is a mix of Guardsman with slightly extra metallic in it.

Now, this helps your search, doesn't it?

Default Hmmm....

I still need to try out the PPG color they mixed and see if I like it. I actually think I do. It should be sapphire blue - '66 T-Bird code G.

Thanks

Default Sorry for the hijack...

Nedsel - 2 original Cobras!! Could you please post some pics and tell us a few stories!! How does the leaf spring 289 compare as a driver to the 427?? What do you say when people ask you what brand of replica you're driving?!

What a treat! I've been away from the forums for a bit and what do I find when I get back? We've been joined by someone who really knows about Cobras.

Welcome Ned! Nice to have you aboard. I've admired your car many times. Beautifully done. I would delight in having you bring it to the Forest Grove Concours d' Elegance in July 2004. Let me know if you have an interest.

Al

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Chuck, the color of my 427 is Sapphire, which is a shade lighter - and perhaps slightly more intense - than the color on 3111. I will be interested to know what you think of it once it's shot on a test panel.

As for a discussion of the relative merits of the 289 vs. the 427, that could take a while. But I'll provide some input as time permits.

And I'm always open to new shows/ events - I only wish there were time (and $) to get to all of them!

Thumbs up Sapphire it is!

Ned - the color on yours looks perfect to me. I know you can't really go by pictures but here CSX3111 appears to have more green in it, and yours is a purer blue.

Was 3042 an S/C with dual quads? I guess my question really is, were some S/Cs delivered with dual quads? I am building a KMP and I am trying to make it an accurate S/C replica (except for the stainless frame and aluminum block, differential housing and suspension parts). I had intended to run a single carb with a turkey pan and S&H air cleaner, but I am concerned that one S&H air cleaner won't flow enogh air, so I am considering a dual quad set-up. Sorry to sort of hijack this thread. Sort of.

Lew... 3042 was an original 2x4 S/C.

Quite a few S/Cs had 2x4's.

Ned,

If you'd like to know more about the Concours 'd Elegance in Forest Grove, OR (Portland area)
please drop an email. You can email me through the club and we can correspond privately if you wish. I don't put my address on the posts.

FYI Carroll Shelby was Senior Judge and lent his personality and charisma to this event some years ago. There are several original cars at the event each year, though generally not judged.

At the very least, it's safe to say you'd likely bring home a "Best in Class" trophy.

Sorry to pirate the thread.

Al

Lew:

From everything I can tell, all the factory cars sold as S/C's - which is to say 30xx serial # cars which were originally planned as full-comp cars, but got sold as street cars instead when the demand for the former was satisfied - came through with the medium-rise, dual-quad carburetors. This was a change from the magnesium intake with a single four-barrel and the "turkey pan" thast the comp cars were equipped with.
