Superformance Brock Coupe
I see the Superformance Brock Coupe on the Club home page, but I just don't get it - the style is nothing that has ever appealed to me - it doesn't look like a Cobra, so what's the big deal.
Is the appeal performance, versus look, or I'm I just out of the curve on the look? Would most Club members want this type of car in their garage? |
Vegan, I'm with you, nice looking, but awesome performance...I'd like one for the performance, but I think I'd rather have a GT-40 look-alike.

I've always been in awe of the 427 Cobra since seeing one in 1965, unwavering awe. |
The appeal of these cars is their rarity. Only 6 were made before Ford pulled support in favor of the GT40 project. I think they're beautiful cars.

First of all, Coupes are Cobras. They are essentially the same under the skin and all carry CSX2000-series chassis numbers. Secondly, I would venture to guess that quite a few Cobra fans would consider them more "beautiful" than a Cobra roadster. I personally would describe the roadster's shape as "brutal", or "aggressive", more quickly than I would use the word "beautiful". Whatever, that's a matter of semantics, but the point is there is a reason why these cars, when they (rarely) come to market, sell well into the millions. I think CSX2300 brought around $4M or $4.5M at Monterey a couple of years back. Part of that is rarity and history, as pointed out already, but part is their design. As for them looking like a Datsun, I've never seen that in one of the original Coupes. I've seen it in some of the replica bodies out there and I know what you're talking about in that respect, Vegan, but I do think Brock has done a pretty nice job of capturing the original shape in a design that shares no dimension with the original. He ought to have--he designed both the original cars and the SPF Coupe.

re:coupe
as a young man not of the era I agree with vegan..doesn't trip my trigger but the GT40 does. the look of the roadster to me is 'brutal elegance'--> as does the GT 40 in my opinion. the new
coupe would look much, much better with the new wheels once they are on (trigo or comparative) the wheels look pretty kit car ish. |

I have "no taste" I guess:D
Sold my SPF roadster and am in pursuit of a Brock Coupe only 6 ever built--as rare as the "fliptop" or Dragon Snake Proved to be faster than the roadsters--even with a sb  What you'll be looking at when one passes you:3DSMILE: |
The Viper looks a lot like the coupe. The rear end is awesome! But I do like the looks of the roadster much better.
|
With out the Coupe ,there would have been no World Championship. The aura of the Cobra would be greatly diminished ,to the point of maybe being just another English car, that some hot rodder from Texas(Calif.?) cobbled together and only sold 1000 or so.

Datsun????
Humbly I can not argue the Datsun 280Z insinuation... however, I also agree the sheer performance of this machine is breathtaking.
The ability to pound a GT-40 into the ground speed and handling wise is almost unbeleivable, but true. The comfort and technology is amazing and the fact that it's original counterpart commands multi-million dollar figures just adds to the mystique. Now that Roush had a hand in the chassis and none other than original Coupe designer Peter Brock has created this car, it doesn't get anymore "serious" than this, as far as any so called "replica" is concerned. As Doc Emmet Brown said as he sat in his Time Delorean in Back to the Future, "...hang on, now you're going to see some serious sh!t..." /Randall |
I would gladly trade the CSX I just ordered for The Brock Daytona coupe. I had the opportunity to speak in detail with Pete Brock and sit in the new Superformance coupe. Better designed than the original and faster in street trim with bigger Brakes, That was Pete Brocks words. My first words while sitting in it was "SIMPLY AWSOME". Great ergonomics, A/C plenty head room and leg room and windows that roll up. The one he had at Monterey Historics had a stroked 351 windsor. Pete told me that a complete coupe as it sat was 91K and I think he said a roller was 70-75K. Wish I could afford it.

Rollers from Dynamic 64K--more if you want custom paint

Superformance Brock Coupe price
Maybe you were sitting in the Carbon Fibre bodied version, which I would assume would be pricier than the hand layered glass version. Both can be had as an option.

Kudos to SPF and Mr. Price
Folks,
I think that Jim Price and company should be congratulated for producing a very fine automobile that is in a class of it’s own. Further congratulations and most importantly, wisdom, for their hiring of Peter Brock to provide the update to his original design. (Or redesign, whatever you wish.) I feel that Peter Brock got the short end of the stick in the old days and should have been recognized to a much larger degree for his design skills, his vision, and his overall contributions to Motorsports. I also must applaud SPF for calling the car “The Brock Coupe”. (You know, credit where credit is due.) A great fellow and a great design, now properly recognized by an obviously great company. Good on ya, Mr. Price and crew. |
Richard...
Boy, pretty kind words Richard. I'm sure Peter appreciates it and doesn't talk much about that raw deal he got. I know Pete waited a long time to be recognized as you state, and had to build another car to get it. Good thing he ran into Jim Price... what a story that first meeting would be, eh? (hmmm, I've got an idea...)
By the way, after talking with Peter I'm pretty sure he would have done it for free... maybe he did? He did ask for a few bucks for gas the other day ;-) /Randall |
I think I saw somewhere that the new "Brock Coupe" , as a roller, was $63,800. That, I'm sure is a glass version. Like Randall Thomas says, the carbon fiber version would be pricier!

Glass is 63.8K--64 was easier to type one handed--have a cast on my left hand:LOL:

I saw the Brock Coupe at Monterey & didn't care for it for the same reason I don't care for roadsters that have been 'modernized' (personal preference.)
If I want comfort and 21st century performance, I'd opt for a car designed for the 21st century - one with a VIN number I wouldn't have to tap dance for. The Brock Coupe is striking, but I didn't find the cockpit amenities particularly impressive, either in materials or ergonomics. I don't like any wheels over 15" on a 'classic' design (the Brock's look like they came off of an Escalade,) and next to the original coupe, the added dimensions gave it a Viper-esque bulk. The original Cobras were cramped, noisy, bare-boned race cars for the street (as far as I know, only Phil Spector ever ran a coupe on the street.) I don't understand taking the concept & pampering it into a Lexus. I'm sure my opinions might burn some biscuits on the forum, and I apologize in advance - but I take enough flak for driving a 'kit car.' I see no reason to remove all doubt. Durt |
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have sat and ridden in the SPF coupe, and sat in one of Lee Holman's half million dollar GT 40 Mk II's, they are very different cars, both unbelievably handsome to my eyes.
My son, a Boxster driver, thinks a '69 Dodge Charger R/T, my first new car, is so ugly he wouldn't ride in one. Nor a '65 GTO, another of my favorites. He loves the two new Lambo cars, and the half million dollar new Porsche Carerra, all of which leave me cold. I love the looks of both the GT 40 and the SPF coupe, both very handsome to me. If i were and could by only one, i have no clue which i would get. to each his own. |
