Sticky Tires

I've got on Google, called around and it seems to me that
if you are going to stay with 15" wheels and you have
295/50R15's, all that is available anymore are BFG Radial
T/A's, Dunlop, Hurcules and Cooper. I really don't want to go
more than a 27" dia. The front are 265/50R15. My question is:
Are speed rated, quality tires in these sizes available anymore?

Goodyear still makes a tire in this size,the Eagle GT2 as does Yokahama(the Avid S/T) ,but alas they are only S and T speed rated as well.There are non DOT rated tires available from Roger Kraus Racing .Realisticly,how many of us drive for any lenth of time over 116mph anyway.The size tires commonly used on the Cobra were designed for much larger/heavier cars and pickups that place much heavier loads on them,so I would guess that the actual speed rating is probably a little higher than what's on the sidewall.I frankly would be happy with a tire that just had a much stickier tread that didn't give up wet weather traction,and didn't cost a small fortune.New rubber once a year could become a Springtime ritual,and our garages would always have that"tire shop"aroma.Ah-life would be just that much better!

Thank you for the info. I will check those out. I rarely go over 80 mph. I did get pulled over coming into Truckee Calif from North Lake Tahoe by a CHP. He had me at 93 mph. He was going in the opposite direction and I saw him coming at me, so I braked and when he went by, I was still doing 93 mph. I saw him lock 'em up, so I just pulled over. Really got my ass chewed out big time. He let me go!

Aeon,do you have anymore info on the new Firestone?If Bridgestone has had a hand in it,it may be some pretty decent rubber.

I gave up on commercial rubber. Went with these from Krause. Otherwise, there are the Hoosier bias ply Autocrossers. The Goodyears have worked really well...very little wonder on the freeways, fairly comfortable.

Obviously, they stick! Not bad on the eyes either.

Jamo: Nice car.......and those tires are sweet! Are they "raised white letters", or are the letters painted on a flat sidewall? Are there any "insurance problems" that you are aware of (or anybody else aware of?) if you get into an accident with non DOT tires on the car?

www.rogerkrausracing.com. A Dremel tool can make "Not For Highway Use" tires "For Highway Use". Of course, that would be wrong.

Oh, those Goodyear Eagle tires look nice! I found the tires I want
on the Roger Kraus web site. The store is only 1.5 hrs from here. I will call tomorrow. Thanks

Bluesman...you're welcome.

Terry...these are painted on by Goodyear using stencils...as with all of their race tires.

Turk...nope, still just the one depression, as I have deemed it, that I had back at the Fling. When I saw the pic, I thought I had picked up another as well...turns out that it's just from me scotch padding an area and the light hitting it just right. Scared the phuck out of me though. Thanks for noticing and asking about it here. Of course, several of us in the know never commented about how phucked up your former CSX was body-wise online, with the mismatched doors, Ironworker's dropped tool dent and all. But hey, that's Dano's problem now.

Little dents and dings are what give a fine sporting motorcar it's charm and history-a true road warrior as opposed to a waxer or trailer queen.In the world of collectable firearms,a little"patina" around the muzzle or cylinder of an otherwise impeccably maintained gun makes it more valuable,not less.I'm glad to see that you embrace your Cobra's battle scars as something to be proud of,JAMO,not something to apologize for.That is one sweet machine,something most of us can only dream about.

Jamo, the Goodyears look fantastic, but are they DOT approved? If not, what does this mean with regards to insurance assuming the worst happens and we wreck with non DOT approved tires?

The two "B" sizes, non-DOT. Don't really know what's gonna happen if I ever make a claim. They are rain treaded and have done fine so far on wet roads after a rain shower. Buckley drove on the same ones for quite awhile on his ERA...to/from Vegas, the infamous DVSFII burnout and more.

Thanks, and you're right. Don't bother me a bit...car hasn't been washed in two months and the engine bay's even getting a bit grimey.

Pat's just screwing around and Turk's being, well.....Turk.

These two old wimmin like to sit around and "innocently" find things on all my cars to make snide remarks about... Sweet old ladies actually. Gotta respect the elders, you know.

BTW, they should fit quite nicely under the Butler's big rear wheelwells...but check up on the offset on the wheels. I had BRI No. 5 that Douglass his good self now owns. Wonderful Cobras.

I think Turk was learning how to correct his golf slice off my CSX which is why I've appropriately named it "The Zit". Remember how the Kirkhams said these cars have memory, well mine is still undergoing psychoanalysis from the California transition.

I think about how Turk took advantage of me every time I read about the California DMV and Emissions Board!
