Ask this question over on the FE Fourm and watch the internet fist-t-cuffs start.
Of couse, the best definition for the FE name came from a famous race track in France in the spring of 1966.
That year, FE stood for "F**k Enzo"

FE???
It was my understanding when they 1st came out with the 352 that it stood for Ford-Edsel... However with my sideoiler I believe that F***ing Expensive is more appropriate...

I don't know abot what FE stands for but they were also called 'wedge' engines. The blocks also had nickle in the alloy for weight saving and strength

I dont buy the edsel thing,,the fe was designed and called such a few years before Edsel threw the Edsel together,,the engines were developed as early as 55 ,but not fully tested and released until 58,{actually a FEW late 57's got a police version of the 332,},another thing to note,,the Edsel name was up in the air until just days before initial car press releases,,in my opnion that ditches the edsel engine theory ,and I know what I read,,dont we all ? lol
any one have or know someone who has a copy of "the ford road" ? published in the late 70's,,me thinks this may be where I read the fairlane thing,,it was an interesting, dealer only book, ford made lots of things besides cars,,,have fun guys,,Tk

this has been questioned to death.
at this point, isn't the question to ask "who was actually there who would actually know the answer to this question"?
need to determine WHEN the term was first used, by whom, and with all the contacts here, ask the key person, the person who'd REALLY REALLY know, what it means.
otherwise, this is just more endless bandwidth waste to no point.

I don’t know if any of you guys in Nor Cal Know a guy buy the name of Harold Souza (Souza Bros. Racing & machine) but he is a friend of mine and he has been building/racing the FE since the mid 60's he worked for Silva lite/ ultradine and had a great influence on the design on many of the FE components we all use today, and he told me that it stands for Ford / Edsel.

Roger
Those Edsel motors do look a lot like the 427. I think that is actually more proof that FE did stand for Ford Edsel. That was the "E" in FE and the "F" was Ford.
Good job on digging up the page.
So to capsulize...
We all worship the motor that was the begining of one of Fords biggest Flops.
Ford couldn't sell Edsels but they sold plenty of Pinto's
Shelby couldn't sell Cobra's but kit car makers can't seem to build them fast enough.
Now Shelby can sell Cobra's made even from a Malted and AC one the Oldest car companies on the planet went bye bye because they couldn't sell what they couldn't sell back in the 60's.
It reads like the beginning to the old sitcom "Soap"

I think every one has a theory,,but as I said,,I read it in a ford publication 20 plus years ago,,named after the fairlane estate,,I didnt dream that or make it up,,
Ehe edsel thing dosent work for sure,,do the math,Fe was Fe on paper long before edsel was edsel, the edsel name was very last minuite,,fe was designated in the development stages of the engine,,circa 54 55,and,,why would they name the new jet age motor, the one intended for family wagons, pickups and police cruisers, race tracks etc,,after ONE car ? as I said,,do the math,,
all that said,,it is a silly debate,,band width waste as someone said,,but isnt that what this is all about ? it's too cold to drive a cobra,,lol Tk

TK,
I had a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 with the 332 P.I. engine in it and on the paper work it called it a 332 P.I. FE engine. I asked the dealer what the FE stood for and he told me he really wasn't sure but had heard that it had something to do with Fairlane but had no clue as to what the E actually was supposed to mean. That was probably one of the best engines I ever had. On some of my later ones, I think they should have added a letter and made it FED. Fix Engine Daily.
