I've been a victim of ebay snipers as well - for a vintage bike part.

There is a very simple solution that ebay could implement to eliminate the practice. Have the auction terminate at a random time within the final auction hour or day, after a lull in biding is detected. Sniping is only possible when you know exactly when the auction is closing.
