Ownership Experince #2 Safety And Insurance
AS I GET FURTHER CONVINCED A COBRA IS FOR ME I AM CURIOUS ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A NOT SO SAFE VEHICLE SAFER...PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, I AM NO STRANGER TO DANGEROUS HOBBIES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY WIFE WHO BY THE WAY TOLD ME AS SHE GOT OUT OF A SUPERFORMANCE TEST RIDE "WE HAVE TO GET ONE..IT IS AWESOME" I'M THE CONSERVATIVE ONE HERE!
I AM CONCERN about :
HEAD SUPPORT
FUEL TANK (GET A FUEL CELL?)
ROLL BAR SET UP( GET 2..UGLY!?)
SIDE COLLISION...FORGETTABOUTIIT!javascript :smilie(' ' )
ALSO;
GOOD DRIVING RECORD (KNOCK ON WOOD) NO CHILDREN AT HOME AND 40 YEARS OLD...INSURANCE RATES??? ISSUE OR JUST REAL EXPENSIVE?
SUMMARY, I THINK I SHARE THE COBRA PASSION AND EXCITEMENT BUT I WANT TO BE AS RESPONSIBLE AS POSSIBLE IN SELECTING A TOY WHICH MY WIFE WILL ALSO ENJOY.
HELP ME PLEASE!!
THANKS,
RICK

Never worried, still don't about head support- even new roadsters don't offer much.
Definiteley get a fuel cell
Yes and no--ugly a point of view or perception, as are full hoops, roll cage. etc., if you want a totally safe car by a new Volvo or such.
Insurance? it depends on your company, driving record, and other factors some have cheap coverage--some quite spendy for the same marque of car. No definite guidelines .
BUT IF YOUR WIFE LOVES IT WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED
MOST FUN ON FOUR WHEELS THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE--BAR NONE IMO AND YOUR WIFE LOVES IT! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?

the double roll bars do look kind of ugly but there is NO WAY i would ever take a passenger in a car without it. That would not be pretty should something unexpected happen.

Superformance
Rick ~ I agree with G.R. regarding head support. I don't care much for the looks of double roll bars although I understand why their owners demand them. While new roadsters do not have much in regards to head supports I would also have to say that most are not as dangerous as a high HP 90 inch wheelbase cobra. I think everyone here will tell you that you must be careful and have great respect for the power of your car (I know I do).
Fuel cell is probably a great idea......I do not have one.
Sounds like we are about the same age and both have clean driving records. This year I switched to State Farm and currently pay $80.60 a half for full coverage with $55K agreed valve. Yes I do have some driving and mileage restrictions, but it fits into my driving habits. Some guys/gals have their cars insured as daily drivers and probably pay higher premiums.
Superformance is a great car, and if you took a test drive it was probably @ Dynamic Motorsports in Ross, OH. The Rosens and their sales associates are great people and their customer support is second to none.

5 point harness and I also have a multi nozzle halon system. But these cars are still dangerous. Drive REAL defensively and take a drivers training course, no, take several.
I have seen some totally wiped out cobras in my time, and the occupants walked away. The worst is a t-bone square in the door, if they hit the tires you might be OK.
It has occured to me several time to wear a helmet while driving on the road,,,but the thrill and danger is part of what makes a cobra such a outstanding diversion from everyday life.
Good luck.

Modern seats would go a long way. If you don't want that a number of the original racers had a THICKLY padded 'head rest' bolted to the roll bar. Fuel cell I think is a must so is some sort of collision shut off for electric fuel pumps. I have seen a number of vintage pictures of Cobras racing with a full width forward braced roll bar so while they may not be the norm, much less all that attractive, there is a historical president. Of course, a fire system is always a nice idea.
