Too bad about your loss! The only sad thing about dogs is that they have to go someday. Our current "family" started with Tuco, a pitbull cross. He adopted us as a tiny puppy who just squeezed through the wrought iron gate one day and made himself at home. Turned out he was the only survivor of a stray litter that was born in the bush not far from our house.

He was joined by Caesar, a Belgian shepherd, and Daisy Duke - our huge, beautiful bull mastiff - her head alone must weigh 50lbs. I tried to keep Caesar away from her when she went into heat, but the rat bastard scaled a small tree, climbed onto the pool deck and did the deed anyway.

She had 14 pups and we found good homes for all but 2 of them that we just couldn't part with. The first was Dolly Duke, the "runt" female (she weighs 80lbs now). Pauline just couldn't give her away after she fell into the pool at 5 weeks old and almost drowned. The other was Josey Wales, a magnificent shepherd-mastiff cross who ended up with the best attributes of both parents and is absolutely huge - looks like Bart the bear with a tail tacked on. He's an awesome sight to behold and has a fantastic personality to boot.

We had a grumpy old ginger cat that kept them all in line, but fearless as he was, he patrolled the neighborhood and ended up getting killed by a pack of roaming dogs. So we have a big all dog pack now and all I can say is thank God we have a wide open house on a 3/4 acre lot!
