Default Thunderbird irs

I want to put irs in my Lonestar, and have a chance to buy a Thunderbird v6 LX parts car for $400. Does anyone know if these cars came with irs? The owner doesn't know if it has irs, and I would like to save a trip if it doesn't. Thanks!

Chris, Don't want to rain on your parade but you will need the ability to fabricate all the suspension pieces for the rear of the car. Lone Star built one, but they didn't understand anything about an IRS suspension to do it correctly.. If you are proficient in such matters, good luck and poster your pictures.

Thanks, db

......check with an SPF owner/dealer. Someone told me that the SPF had the T-bird unit. Someone else said it was a Lincoln Continental (!? ) unit....that would seem a tad heavy--but there's the best lead I can give you.

Don, my son is a chassis engineer for Visteon, the company that originally designed and built the Tbird irs. It's his idea, he is also a master fabricator, and welder, I will be the gopher on this project. Fred, I plan to stop in at Olthoff Racing tomorrow, I go by there frequently. Still wanting to know if the 94 v6 lx car even has irs. I have another line on one, will check that tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.

No! The V-6 does not have a IRS. The IRS is usually found in the SC or Supercoupe a super charged hot rod version of the T-bird. Also, check some Cougars they had the same running gear.

Check the Factory Five Racing forum, there are always people buying and selling them there. FFR sells them outright for around $1800.

Good luck...

I hate to disagree with a guy named JohnnyQuest, but, all T-birds and Cougars, from 1989 on, came with IRS. The SC's had aluminum carriers, all may have been changed to aluminum later to cut mfg. costs. So,Yes, that T-bird does have IRS.

Thanks! I knew someone here would know. Now, to try and beat him down on the price! I can probably part the rest of the car out, and get my investment back.

I just checked, they all do include IRS 1989-1997. I do remember there are differences in the IRS for the turbo coupe 4cyl, supercoupe super charged, 3.8 V-6 and 5.0 liter V-8.

If your car is not setup for the IRS, it will be a pain in the butt to install but it can be done.

I can admit when my post is incorrect but don't mention the word HATE Woodz, the world is full of it already. Get used to another word if you can.

Thx, JQ

Default IRS

Chris,
It's a fairly simple install if you have a bud that can do "in tight" MIG so you don't put the car up in smoke.
See private eMail to exchange data and put you intouch with the supplier we use.
makes for a good package with the 11.0" COBRA brake revision while you are at it also.

They all have IRS but if I remember right the 1889-1995 SC's all had 8.8 IRS with 3.27 gears.

The 1991 Mercury Cougar XR7 5.0L HO had a 8.8 IRS with 3.08
(I had one of these, rare car).

The 1990 Mercury Cougar XR7 3.8L SC had a 8.8 IRS with 3.27, also a rare car.

All the rest were 7.5" IRS if I remember right but you could check on the MN-12 forum.

Ron, thanks. I hadn't even considered the 7.5/8.8 possibilities. Yhis car is a plain jane v6, so the irs center will be 7.5. A salvage yard near me has several Thunderbirds, will check with them tomorrow, then I will only get the parts I need, not a whole car to be disposed of later.
