Default engine displacement and badges

Hey guys, if you are running a 351w bored and stroked to 427, is it okay to display 427 badges on your car or is that considered poor form?

To me, not at all.

If you're replicating the body style, then a 427 badge is fine. Why not?

There are "351", etc. badges available if you had to... but do what ya like.

It all depends upon who you ask. Some people think it is bad form, many don't, and plenty of people do it. My opinion is do whatever you like, and don't apologize for it. These cars are supposed to be about enjoyment and a lot of it is the look of the car.

Well, the 427 badge refers to the body style, correct? Or did I dream that somewhere?

Blykins, that is what I assumed but I am curious to find out if there is a consensus opinion on issue.

Here's what I'd like to have.

Is there a reasonable source?

Default BE LIKE CARROLL ....

Supplying 428s in most CSX3000s didn't stop Carroll from putting a 427 badge on them.

Ron,

When you say that other badges are available, do you mean fender badges that follow the same format as the original badges, but with displacements other than 427? If so, where?

Oh man!, talk about stirrin the pot. Define "consensus". Sorry, just being a gashole!

I agree with STG,
If Ole Shel could put 428's in with 427 badges then I would say a stroked 351 qualifies as well. You will run into the purist from time to time, but hey your paying for it not them. Build what you like, not what others (Who are probably jealous) would have you build. The only time I would be a purist is if I saw a real 427 car with the wrong motor.

Don't the Shelby 427 club racers have 351W's in them?

I think Tony Branda and Cobraspares (UK- company) both have the side badges in all sorts of number combos....

One of our Aussie members is running a 514 but could only get "Cobra 460" rocker covers. He had 514 numbers water cut from aluminium in the same font as the 460. I machined off the 460 on the rocker covers and he's going to attach the 514 numbers where 460 was. It should look great when it's all together.

I plan on machining up my own fender badges to reflect my engine choice

Cheers

lineslinger, This might seem real dumb... I had a good running 351W 385hp in my car with 427 badges and got tired of people asking if my car was a 427 and trying to explain. So I spent another $10,000 to build a 427W to match the "stinkin" badges. I have a Corvette with a 427bb -- too much weight up front. So that's my 427W story, and I'm stickin to it (with low oil pressure and all). Now, please, you Guy's don't laugh so loud that I can hear you from my garage.

The old badge debate. Some people think it is OK, some don't. Some think it is an indication of engine size, some think it is the body style.

Bottom line, it is your car. Put what ever the heck you want on it. The 'is that a 427' question does get tiresome. If they don't know what they are looking at............

I wonder if I switch to 351 Cleveland badges will I get the same question?

Rick

Well, I have a 351w bored and stroked to 427.5cu.in. I also have the 427 body style. I have the 427 emblems. When someone asks "is that a 427", I say "yes it is". I don't bother to tell them it's a 427 smallblock. Sometimes I even say it's a lightweight 427. You can really have fun with people sometimes.

I think if you have a 427W (or anything above 400ci for that matter) you can pretty much answer "yes" to that question and feel good about it. I've got a 289 in my car, and I am going to get rid of my 427 badges because I am so tired of that question! Here in California, I have to listen to it during all 12 months of driving weather per year. I've thought about stroking the 351W from my Mustang and dropping it in my Cobra just to shut people up!! I wish there were 289 badges available that looked exactly like the 427 badges, but with "289". Oh well....
