Which transmission do you have in your ERA? The Toploader, Tremec or Richmond?
Based upon that question's answer, there is a choice of "Driven" gears that can help you out. The driven gear fits upon the end of the mechanical speedo cable which is inserted into the transmission.
See page 14 of your ERA assemby and service manual for more information on this.
