GeorgiaSnake has a serious request.......

Without going into great detail on my military service let me just say that I was in the 3/17th Air Cav during my tour in VN. We had a very proud tradition, a tradition that allows us to support each other 30 plus years after the fact. The unit was disbanded soon after VN only to be reformed recently.

The 3/17th has been in Afghanistan taking it to the Taliban for quite some time and carried on the tradition we established many years ago. I feel connected to these young men and women in more ways than I or any of you will ever understand which brings me to my rather odd request.

Back in January the 3/17th was doing as always when one of the soldiers was tragically wounded. PFC Kenneth Adams was shot in the head, in one of those freak accidents, by a fellow trooper. Kenny somehow survived the gun shot but lost sight in both eyes. He is currently undergoing physical therapy at Ft. Drum and learning to use a cane. He will eventually be provided with a guide dog.

What I would like to do, through this forum, is have someone help me make arrangements to take Kenny for a ride in one of these fire breathing beast we covet. As Kenny’s condition changes and improves he will likely be moved to the Houston area. I have contacted his young wife with the hope of pulling this off and need the help of forum members. I have included a link to the 3/17th website so you can read first hand what young soldiers like Kenny are sacrificing so we can sleep in peace. I personally think we should consider doing this or something similar for all of our young soldiers that have made unselfish sacrifices for our well being, but for now I would like to help one fallen brother.

http://members.aol.com/bear317/spurs.htm Takes you to our history and the following will take you to some current information http://members.aol.com/bear317b/support.htm

Thanks
Randy

Randy, an awesome and touching gesture. I would also do a quick post on the Texas site and link to this if you haven't yet. The Texas Club is one of the marvels of this site and I am sure you will have some takers.

We'll find someone! I'll drive to Houston myself if I have to, but I don't think that will be required....we have a lot of good people in Houston!

kountzecobra 04-09-2004 06:43 AM

No Problem. If a Houston Local can't do it, I'll take care of it.

GeorgiaSnake 04-09-2004 06:46 AM

Thanks Ryan. I will post more information as it becomes available. This is very significant issue from my vantage point. We all have a debt to these young soldiers and it is time to pay.

What I find disappointing is the number of views this thread has recorded and only two comments

GeorgiaSnake, GREAT MOVE AND IDEA!!!! Count me in, I'll volunteer me and my car right now! I'm sure we'll have to draw straws for the privilege to take this hero for a ride! David, I can't make it to the club meet tomorrow, but put that on the agenda for discussion and let's figure out the best way to make this happen!

To the Texas group THANKS :3DSMILE: I had a feeling I would get this type of response. Now the goal shifts to the rest of the country. I will find out what needs to be done on this end and keep you informed.

We have thousands like Kenny scattered all over this country. We also have the sons and daughters of those that paid the ultimate price. Initially they have each other for support but as time passes they are discharged from the service and sent packing to live with their injuries and losses.

Back in 69 and 70 several drag racers put together a deal to transport two Boss Mustangs to S.E Asia, including V.N. They took the cars all over the country and included exhibition runs on the many airfields.

I don't propose we take our Cobras to the middle east but we can do a great service in this country. A huge number of soldiers are gearheads and I feel certian they would appreciate anything we could do.

Thanks again guys.
Randy

Randy-

I can't let those Texians down in Baja Oklahoma have all the fun.

Please PM me a mailing address so I can pop for the fuel and maybe some decent barbecue, if such a thing exists in Tejas.

You're gonna need 3 straws now!

Ken/David,

Make sure you have 3 straws and put my name on one of them.

kountzecobra 04-09-2004 02:54 PM

We'll just all have to show up in force.

flipper35 04-09-2004 02:58 PM

Hey, anyone former or currently in the armed forces is welcome for a ride. Give me a ride in one of thier planes/helicopters and I'll let them drive. OK, I would probably let them get behind the wheel out of traffic anyway. Even this guy in an open parking lot.

On a side note, I am glad there are people that are willing to go take the fight to the enemy.

mr0077 04-09-2004 03:51 PM

Brent, well said...I'm proud of this fellow and all the guys that are over there protecting us...and mighty damned mad at the morons (traitors?) who are running down our effort.

Edley Rondinone 04-09-2004 04:25 PM

If anyone in the L.A. area needs a ride in a Cobra, I'll drive mine!!

GeorgiaSnake 04-09-2004 05:58 PM

We seem to have an abundance of Cobras and drivers - now we need to find the riders. I'm working on a few things - stay tuned.

there are many vets on this forum. I am sure someone will be there for him.

I was watching TV recently, and they were reviewing some battle in WWII in Belgium, towards the end of the war. An American soldier was recalling his time there. He related how he had put his head up ver a railroad embankment, and was shot in the head by some German sniper. He lived, but he said the last thing he was ever to see was the green fields in front of him.

I saw yesterday a photo of about 6 marines kneeling in prayer over a slain solder, lying on the ground by a vehicle. It brought tears to my eyes.

The sacrifices of our young soldiers in training and combat is something that i respect and is why i fly my flag every day.

bittentoo 04-10-2004 05:07 AM

SeorgiaSnake,

Just let me when and where. The Orange One would be proud to be of assistance to any and all of our military!

Hey, Houston bunch, why don't we all show up and give the whole family a ride:D

Rick, David, play ya one potato, two potato........:D

tcolley1 04-10-2004 06:07 AM

Randy,

I'm a vet and live in Houston.

I would be HONORED to give this young soldier a ride when he is transfered down here. My Spec Racer is at his disposal.

Just let me know where and when, OK?

Terry
