Default The Corvette Cobra and Aerosmith

So, I'm putting everything away after taking Steve Beaudry for a little toot Sunday night, and my neighbor across the court shows up with a "car nut" in tow who wanted to see my ride. I would guess the car nut to be mid 30's....

Car nut: Ah, A Corvette Cobra!! Sweet!

Me: Ummm.... its a Shelby Cobra, or Ford Cobra, or AC Cobra, but not a Corvette Cobra. I think Shelby did talk to GM before he went to Ford for the motor, but it's definitely not a Corvette Cobra....actually its a Replica....

Car nut: Yeah, I've heard of them...kit cars right.....

Me: Well uh.........

Car nut: it is - I'm postive it's a Corvette Cobra. I owned an LT1 (I think that's what he said) in '69. Do you know what that sonofa***** is worth today?

Me: No

Car nut: Probably $300000.

Me: Didja catch Barrett Jackson? I think they sold a few of them Corvettes. Did'ja happen to hear about the recent original Shelby 427 that sold on eBay for $375 large?

Car nut: No, but I know your car is a Corvette Cobra - made by GMC - matter of fact, the same car is in an Aerosmith video right now...you know....the one with the wide open mouth up front.........(car nut is standing at front of car with arms joined forming large circle).

Me: Ummmm, I don't know it....

Car nut: Check it out man. It's the same car, pretty sure....

Me: I'm pretty sure it's not a Corvette.

Car nut: Well, I think you need to check it out...

Me: Um, I have to go now. The, uh, Sopranos started 3 minutes ago...

Car nut and neighbour: Thanks man, nice car....

Every word true, I swear.......

Could he be confused with a '57 Corvette? It's kind of got a wide open mouth...

Sorry you had to endure so much pain listening to him.

Bruce,
When I get yahoos like that, I usually first try to point out what the car really is to them. Invite them to take a good look at it. If they keep going on about it, I just basically go along with the gag and show them I'm really not interested in arguing about it (because I really don't care, and it's my car anyhow). I'll say something like "How about that? Thanks.", or "OK, if that's what you think...I'm not going to debate it for the next hour". Usually shuts them up quick. Otherwise, you'll be there for an hour.

What a frustrating conversation THAT must have been. The older you get the more you realize the number of people out there that just dont listen. Its amazing.

That story sounds made up, Bruce, but I know better from experience. None quite that blatant, but wow. Hey at least "Cobra" was in the name he gave it.

You'd be amazed at the people that think mine's a "Sting Ray".

One day after pulling into Wendy's for a frosty, the kid behind the counter said (to his coworkers) "Man that car's so fu**ing cool. It has a Chevy 454 in it. Those things are worth like 5 million dollars, that's SO FU**ING COOL." One of the other guys behind the counter said, "Nice try, moron, it's got a Ford 427 in it." Well, he was closer at least.

Others think it's an MG.

My favorites, though, even though the idiots are a lot of fun, are the stories of the people who used to race them back in the 60's. No kidding, at least half of the people that have commented on my car used to race Shelby Cobras in the 60's. It's positively amazing how many of those cars there must have been. Because at least 100 people in central Ohio who I have actually met apparently used to race Shelby Cobras.

PS - Sorry he's your new neighbor. I'm sure the fun has just begun. Thank God for the Sopranos, huh? You might have to start watching six feet under, as well...spares you another hour from "smart guy"....

I've had several people ask if the Coupe is a new Corvette and several if it's a Viper.I have politely said No, it is not. Usually they want more info, but have never had anyone argue with me about what it is.........yet.

A Covette LT 1 worth $300,000? Cut that by 80% and he may be on the $$$. In addition to being grossly misinformed, and probably unaware of the English alphabet, he was most likely referring to a ZL 1, which he, undoubtedly, never owned.

From another point of view. Have you ever tried to explain what type of car you have to someone who likes cars, but doesn't know what a Cobra is, when the car isn't present? I have on several occasions and almost without exception, they say "Oh, a Mustang". I say "no, a Cobra". After a couple of attempts to describe the car, I tell them that it looks like a typical 60's British sports car on steroids, breathing fire. They say that they now undersatnd and walk away scratching their heads.

Yeah, that's on my list of favorites, too...when they can't see the car.

"OH yeah, Shelby Mustang. Cool car."

"Well, yeah...very cool car, but...not what i'm talking about."

"Mustang Cobra? Saleen?"

"Go away. Come back when you're smarter."

Matt - I was hoping somebody would post this pic...not being an fan of Aerosmith videos, I had no idea what he meant. I think you probably have the car he was meaning....with a good imagination maybe with one of those morphing deals you could get from a Cobra front end to the 'vette you posted.....I guess....

Looks like the Corvette wasn't the only thing with a big mouth that day...

It's almost impossible to describe the car to someone who doesn't know much about cars when you don't have it with you. Even when I say British car, they still look perplexed. I just say it's about the size of an MG or Miata, but MUCH different!!

I think Aerosmith did use a Cobra in one of their older videos, but it's been years since I saw it, so I'm not positive. I believe it was for "Dude looks like a lady"

Yup, I say it's sort of like an old Austin Healey on steroids like Arnie might like, but with a FORD engine.

Bruce, you should have offered to sell it to the guy for $250,000 ( a $50,000 savings )

Except Ernie would have offered $35,000 for it. LOL

You account tops most thing I have heard lately.

I have even been asked if mine is "one of those new Jaguars"

Usually if someone is asking what kind of a car it is and
has no clue I like to tell them, with a smile,
that it is a Mazda on steroids. If they ask further then
I'll tell them it s a cobra.

It amazes me that so many guys in the 20-30 age range
have no clue, yet frequently a 10-12 year old will
say "cool cobra", and you can tell they know what it is.

Sure does make for some entertaining conversations.

My sympathies man, nothing like someone else telling you what you own. You said it was the guy in tow, not your neighbor right? At least you won't have to deal with it everyday.

When they are that stupid...I start the motor and let the pipes drown them out.

I love the ones who tell their buddies that my motor is definitly a big block Chevy cuz all big block Chevvies have their distributors up front.

The Aerosmith video in question was for "Rag Doll" and he cruises it down the street at the end of the song, blowing kisses to all the cute girls who are leaning out of their doorways. I always liked the end of that video.
I am in my mid-thirties and can testify that most people my age have no idea that a "Cobra" is not just a supercharged Mustang.
I tried to explain it to my 9-year-old son, but he's never been in anything faster than my truck. He's been brainwashed by his friends at school and that crappy b-movie "too fast too furious" into thinking that Honda's are cool.
Maybe when he learns to not rat me out to the wife, I will take him for a ride in my buddy's car. 400 normally aspirated horses ought to wake him up!
