Polishing a stainless steel fuel tank
I have a stainless steel fuel tank in my BDR. I wanted to shine it up a bit using a random buffer and some rubbing compound or polishing compound but I am concerned about static electricity giving me a big bang. Any thoughts on this??? I am not planing to take it out of the car just buffing the bottom. Oh yes it does have fuel in it. Thanks

I polished my aluminum tank while it was on the car with no static build up. If you are concerned you can always get an ankle strap with the cable that snaps on the ankle strap and has a clip on the other end. Clip it to a ground and to static build up. Computer shops usually have them.

I use MetalWax. It is a two-stage process; first stage is a gentle acid that goes on with a watery rag to clean the surface. Wipe dry with a separate cloth. Then use the Wax. This company says that the compounds leave a lit of microscopic grit, which attracts dust and dirt, thus clouding up the surface, thus requiring MORE compounding, which leaves the girt, etc etc etc.
Go to a Harley motorcycle show, the ones with all sorts of vendors. There is usually some guy with a metal polishing system that polishes the bottoms of aluminium cans, as samples.

Hey, I use the metal wax too. I did have to polish the aluminum to get it shiney first. Stays shiney a long time now.

What did you polish it with? Compounds?

I used a 6" spiral wound cotton wheel on a drill with emery compound, then a regular 6" wheel with tripoli compound. I will see if I can get a grab from the video or just post a short section of the video that shows before and after. It made a big difference.

yeah, I polish...
If you want some serious industrial strength metal cleaner/polish try hitting a truck shop or dealership. The same stuff I use on my heavy equipt makes small work of anything on my Cobra. Yeah, I polish a thing or two...
