Default 428 CJ hp

The 427 was available in two stages ... Q code and R code . The Q code was a single 4 bbl version and was factory rated at 410 hp @5600 rpm and 476 ft lbs of torque @ 3400 rpm . The R code was a dual quad version rated at 425 hp @ 6000 rpm and 480 ft lbs of torque @3700 rpm .
This is one of my toys ... a 63 1/2 Galaxie 427 Q/R code depending on my mood .
According to my Ford data , the 428 CJ ... single 4 bbl rated at 735 cfm , put out 335 hp @ 5200 rpm and 440 ft lbs of torque @ 3400 rpm . They were playing with the hp ratings ( advertised ) to get around the insurance surcharges etc back then . Notice that the hp is way under the torque while it is closer on the 427 . I don`t have info on a standard 428 , but believe it is about the same ratings , however , don`t know if Shelby did anything special to the 428 .
Hope this helps .

As far as HP my 428 turned a best of 12.4 at 112 mph back in 1970. The only changes from stock were Dunlop rain race tires, side exhaust, 3310 holley carb and dual point distributor. I used the car as my everyday car. I put around 48,000 miles on the car the first 4 years I had it. The only problems I had with the car were the front ball joints failed and it overheated until I added a second small fan. The ball joint fix was adding zirk fittings.

The SC Cobras turned around 12.20 with Goodyear road race tires so my car wasn't that far off. I also got about 15.5 mpg. I now get between 10 and 12 mpg with a medium riser 427. The only time I ran the car with the 427 I turned 12.6 at 113 mph. However it was 95 degrees and 95 % humidity so it's not a good comparison as the 12.4 was probably at around 50 degrees.
