Should I sell my 70 SCJ Mustang to buy a Kirkham?
I've had this car for years. It has a new 428 in it and a restored interior. The body has been patched but is now rust free. It is a factory shaker car with the factory oil cooler. I have the smog setup factory carb and a NOS dist. It has the correct shifter and speedo reducer. I have LR heads on it. I have cj headsfor it but I'm running modified lr heads. I have white exhaust which is probably due to a water leak therefore the heads need to be pressure tested. The car is tough to work on b/c of the shock towers and I'm tired of looking at it. I haven't driven it in years b/c of the head problem. The heads and engine were rebuilt but there is still a problem. It is fun to drive as llong as you are going straight try to stop or turn and the fun stops. I want a car that drives well.

If I had your car and felt the way you do, it would be a no brainer for me. If you're tired of looking at it, you probably would be better off selling it but are you sure a Cobra is what you want to replace it with? Can you sell it for enough to buy a Kirkham?

I'm thinking the same thing about my Boss 302 and Saleen. That's why I'm going to London.

The stang should be worth $5-60 if I get the head problem sorted out and it running well. I have a new 427 for the kirkham and quite a few toploaders. The Kirkham rolling chassis is $45 now with the brushed finish I like so it should be a swap

It Depends
One thing to consider...your SCJ Mustang will only appreciate in value...
...the Kirkham will at best hold its value (more realistically, depreciate some). However, at the end of the day you need to do what's going to make you happiest (life's too short to do otherwise). |

Kirkham's are great cars......I doubt you would be disappointed. Where do you live?? There might be a local owner willing to give you a ride.

Absolutely not, I agree with Stentor you have a classic, keep it. Kirkham and all the rest (including mine) are only replicas that will go down in value. Don't ever consider a replica as an investment, it's just fun.....

Like to drive a car? the Kirkham (well, mine is anyway) is VERY light and will give you performance you'll never see in the hosstang.
What others have said about investment values is quite true - your income/future needs will speak to this. Have fun in the chase! |
Anyone live central Ma? I would like to at least ride in a Cobra first. That's probably a good idea. I know the 70 will keep going up. I only paid $6000 for it years ago. You can't even buy a rusted out shell for that now.

The engine is going down the street to my new engine builder who is very experienced with FE's. Right now my 67 Cougar is on the lift the 70 will have to wait it's turn

I have two mustangs, a 66 gt350 clone and a 67 fastback that is in the middle of a restoration. I never drive the 66, even with a complete restoration done the right way, it still and always will drive like a boat. the 67 is being restomodded to try and avoid those same issues. It will have coilover front suspension and rear, modern EFI motor and 5 speed as well as gobs of insulation and chassis stiffening. The 66 is for sale and I never really want another early mustang, and even though it has appreciated in value, my enjoyment of a car is worth far more than the meager appreciation I will see. My Kirkham ( and my previous fiberglass cobra) are probably break even money wise but I enjoy it everyday and it drives solid and fast, no rattles,squeeks or sway. Unless your mustang is really a limited production model its appreciation will not be as great as you think. EBAY is full of them. There is no right or wrong answer here, but life is too short to waste it on a car that is sitting and you hate to drive.

What I would do is sell the Stang and buy a Daytona Coupe. At least the coupe could still be driven in inclement or cooler weather. The Superformance Coupes come with all the conveniences of hime so why not?
