Side pipe question?

On the side pipe cut out on the body. How much space is required between the side pipe and the top of the cut out section? Thanks

I think that spacing would vary a bit with different horsepower ratings and various engine mounts. I have about 3/4" clearance and the sidepipes have not touched the paint yet.

Important Tip: Retarded timing raises the exhaust gas temperature considerably. When performing an initial start on a newly painted car, or when installing a new/rebuilt engine, make sure you advance the timing and run a little richer fuel/air mixture. Also, point some portable fans against the sides to help with heat dissipation. This will keep exhaust temps down and avoid blistering the paint.
