Engine Year - engine from the 1960's
I've got a Cobra with a 428 Ford FE engine from the 1960's. Could someone tell me where I will find the engine number that will hopefully include the year that the engine was originally built? I've got a smog issue to address in CA and the engine year is a big issue.
Also, any input relating to smog requirements covering engines built in the 1960's would be helpful - perhaps a web page? My guess is that the engine was from a doner car - possibly 65-68 year range.

The casting code will be the first clue.. Look for a 4 digit code like C6AE or C8AE on the side of the block. C indicates decade (c being 1960) and 6 is the year.
There are other codes as well that are smaller and will vary by block on location.
Smog implication are specific from state to state.

Year of block/engine
In Cali, qualify as an old engine, it has to be more than just the block. The entire engine must be stock. That includes carb, cam, etc....
With a California SB100 number from DMV your 'smog exempt' for life, with any engine!

Here's a picture of mine. You probably can't make out the number 4D25 on it, which means it was cast on April 25, 1974 (it's a service block). The number is right up next to the adapter for the oil lines.

WOW, thanks so much - since my engine is altered, i.e. cam, carb, etc. I'm screwed as far as passing in CA based on a 60's engine - it does appear that securing an SB100 - on of 500 per year is the only clear option. My understand is that even if my Cobra passes, I'd need to go the CA BAR every two years for smog and pass each time.
Geez - CA is a bummer when it comes to kit cars.

Just because your cam isnt stock doesnt mean it cant pass. If you have a mild cam you may pass. If you have a 600 horse beast well then nevermind. It only costs about $35 to visit the BAR referee for a test. Price includes one free retest if I'm not mistaken.

Yes you will have to register as a SPCN (special construction) and then get an SB100 for the smog exemption.

What are your requirements for a pre 68 motor? Here is a pic of the date code on a 428 block.

Thanks for the picture - I'll be checking out my block on Saturday.
It appears that I should arrange for a BAR test to see what happens and pass or not and go for an SB100 on the first business day of next year. I'm always looking at the down side - BAR - don't pass, SB100 - go for SB100 and be the 501st in line! Just Damn!
