what do you guys do with your lead hammer, after the face gets all smashed out of shape? I've beat the face pretty bad.

I bought a set of stainless steel T-nuts from Lynn Park & use a damned mini-sledge hammer. I got completely burned out on the aluminum nuts and the accompanying lead hammer headache.
In answer to your question, I threw them away.

I use a rag that I put on the spinner before I whack it and so far my lead hammer has held up pretty well. I do have to replace the rag once in a while as it will get holes in it, but I have piles of those.

I do the same as Ron, although I use my old socks that have holes in the heel. Just put a couple on and fold the top back over the lead portion ... and use some rubber bands on the handle to hold it on.

This helps protect the rim in case your aim sucks.

Back in the days when lead hammers where allowed at work, we had a mechanic that took his to a grinder to clean it up. He, and his wife both ended up with lead poisoning. So do not grind it.

thanks for all the replys.. I probably will heat it up a little and pound it back with a hammer, then use a sock on it next time.
