Polished or Satin? You be the judge...
Okay, opinions are like ********...everyone has one.  So fire away and tell what you think about this transformation. I decided to exchange Mother's Billet Polish for Scotchbrite pads and lacquer thinner. A few more pics are in my gallery. Again, would like to hear all yays and nays. This car is constantly in evolution...keeps it fun!

One note...if you ever buy one of these fabbed surge tanks from anyone (this one came from FinishLine), make sure you have the top cap bead welded around the base. Mine leaked ever so slightly and I had to remove the tank shortly after these pics were taken (I see a few fingerprints here and there...God I'm anal). We shall see how long I can keep a seal on this thing. And, NO, my stainless tank is NOT for sale.

The brushed looks nice. The polished did as well but that stuff always ends up scratched anyways so why not go with it. Scotchbright pads and WD-40 is all we used for years on aluminum components and structures.

Dean,
I think we had this discussion in the Hillbank parking lot - I prefer the brushed and have serious envy over your valve covers. Any problem with them leaking? I've been wanting some of those, but have been scared away by stories of continual leaks. If I wanted a leaky engine, I would have gotten a big block!

Doug, these covers are probably manufactured in China somewhere, but they do have a billet base (that's the key!). Around $100 plus shipping on FleaBay. They seal up nice. I use a thick composition cork Felpro gasket (two pieces of cork with steel insert), seal them to the cover with Black Ultra RTV, and then tighten them down so that the cork compresses slightly over the lip of the cylinder heads. No leaks. Pay about $30 for those gaskets, but that and the flat billet rail make the difference.
BDR561, I tried to do it myself and it was a PITA to get all the machine marks to go in the same direction. So I farmed out the work to a local metals finishing shop for a total cost of $115. Maintenance (so far...keeping fingers crossed) is a rough Scotchbrite pad and a clean cotton rag dipped in lacquer thinner (be careful around painted surfaces!). Occasional scratches can be worked out with a little 180 grit sandpaper followed by the pad and lacquer thinner (don't ask how I know this).

I like the brushed look ..... and as they say you are never done!!!
I started to polished the aluminum engine compartment panels in my Cobra and after the first "Mirror" panel I did not like it and went with the Scotchbright brushed look.
I still have chrome valve covers and air cleaner, stainless tank, etc. I think some of the stuff will be changed out to brushed.

brushed stainless side pipes might be cool, but I could go either way on that too.

Did you have a hard time getting the finishline surge tank water tight? Seems like with only 2 bolts, and difficulty holding everything together is giving me problems.

Fingers crossed...so far no leaks. Haven't driven it many miles yet, but have had it up to running temperature twice and no leaks. Yes, it is a royal PITA to get it all lined up, gooped up and get both bolts (into the intake manifold) started without making a royal mess or screwing up the gaskets. I honestly don't have a lot of confidence that it will remain leak free for several thousand miles, but time will tell.
