I'm Stuck-which Color Of Red!!
I've posted this before and I've looked at a lot of cars, till I'm dizzy. The choices are Porsche "Guards Red", F1 Red (Ferrari), and Ford "Rio" Red from a 96' Cobra Mustang?? I've got the car in the body shop and need to make a decision soon! I like them all, I just find myself looking for a "true" red or darker red if you will. I really don't like the orange colors in some colors of red. There seems to be different shades with in the same colors as well. I saw two Ferrari's today both painted the same but they looked totally different?? One was more orangie than the other!! Help!! Thanks, Matt.

Guards red is as bright as it gets. No yellow no blue. Rangoon red (an original color) may have some yellow but not much.

Guards red has quite a bit of orange tint to it. Ferrari red is about the purest red you'll find. I believe it's called Rossa Corsa Red, or something along those lines.

This is so true, I have had Guards red and half the time it looked orange! Ferrari red is the way to go if you want RED.

I had a formula car painted Guards red. They told me it was all red no yellow or blue. Thats what the paint shop told me and is all I can reiterate. It is bright.

I agree with you on the bright part, John. Guards red looks like it's hooked up to your electrical system. Subtle, it's not!

deeper red = darker undercoat/primer. Brighter red = lighter undercoat. All paint (even the new stuff) is transparent to a degree.

Thanks guy's! I had forgot about using a darker primer. But what would you use a dark grey or black? When painting a wall we use a dark grey to get the true color or less coats of paint( when painting red). Some people suggest mixing in the color with the primer?? Is there any since to this either? I really don't necessarily want it to pop out (brightness) but to just look deeep! I have a Fastback painted 66 Candy Apple Red and it's just right all the time except at night. It tends to get a little maroon in color. I have looked at all these websites and it's impossible to tell on the computer. I have been to car shows and dealerships galore! I know I picked the most expensive color too! I like the torch red and viper red too, but sometimes they are to orange also... I saw a BMW and don't laugh, a Volkswagen Bug, that both had a really deep red too. If someone would ask, I don't think I could tell them the correct answer! Thanks, Matt.

When we painted my car, we used single stage paint the same color as my final base color as a primer. This did two things: 1)the gloss in the single stage made it easier to block sand, the low spots still showed gloss, and 2) the multiple coats of the same color insured a uniform color and assured me that I was getting the final color I wanted.
Just my .02.
Good Luck

Red
I still never understand these questions but, didn't they originally offer just one shade of red?
Rangoon..........for better or for worse. That's the red if you want it to look like a COBRA.

Rangoon red is on the yellow side of red but better than the blue side imho.

If you want more of a fire engine red (which is typically darker and not as orangish), the late model Ford red that you see on F150 and F250 crew cabs looks great. There is also a late model Honda red that isn't bad. The deep red on the Cooper Mini's is sensational. Can you tell I notice nice, deep red tints?
The red on my SPF is their stock color (Lazer Red) and is on the darker side. But like most reds, it's difficult to photograph them well without getting a lot of orange tint. Most of the pics in my gallery do not do the color justice.

Ah Yes, you are correct! Beautiful car John, I've always admired your detail. I like the Viking Blue cars and Guardsmen Blue too. Two reasons for me though: it seems everyone has a "blue Cobra" and I'm afraid to paint it metallic! Getting the metallic to lay down correctly is really hard! I like solid colors more any way. Plus 289 cars in my opinion look out of place with stripes, except Rick Parker's car. But John, FIA cars didn't have emblems either !? Thanks, Matt.

I went through the same delema. I purchased spray cans of different reds from Tower Paint. Finally settled on Ford Rio Red. I found an old glove box cover from a VW. I painted it Rio Red with a Wimleedon White stripe. I carried around with me and when I saw a red car I would hold up my sample to see if it was darker, orange on yellow. Rio Red won out. The only paint that was a shade different was Ford Ultra Red that was used on Ford Escorts. Try to find a car that is the color you are looking for, it will help with your color choice.

If you want a nice dark red that's not too dark but looks good, check out a 94 SVT Lightning. The color is called Crimson Red Clearcoat. It was used on the 94s only, 93s and 95s are a brighter red.
