My "Hot" Cobra wonlt start ? Help
Hey Guys - Went out yesterday - not too hot out and drove around for about 20-25 minutes. Stopped at 7-11 for a drink (and people gawking at the car) and of course, she wouldn't fire up. Sounded like it didn't want to crank? Now that is the second time that has happened in about 2 weeks. A quick jump from someone started it right up though. The thing is, when it is cold, it turns right over. Only seems to be when i shut it down and go to restart it after only like 5 or 10 minutes that I have a problem. Running a 302 automatic from a 74 Mustang (strong running engine still). Any idea's? Battery, starter? Thanks, JC

check your timing,battery, negative ground post& positive,alternator,starter

Try a heavy duty battery. Sounds like a possible "heat soak" of the starter that then needs more amps to crank. I have heard many people with the same issue, some use a heat shield, some switched to an after market starter.

I had the same issue on a 460 FE block. The problem was the heat soak issue. It would start again after a while, but not if I tried to start it hot. A heat shield helped a little, but I had to wrap the headers in insulation to effect it enough so I could drive it regularly. A new starter would work great for about 4-5 months and then the issue would be back.

What gauge wire are you using for the battery to starter. Should be '0' or '1' gauge.

I switched from a #4 to #0 on the battery wires - end of problem. Had
the same symptoms.

My car developed this problem. I replaced the battery and it went away. The battery was about 3 years old. It wasn't completely dead but it didn't have enough power to turn the engine over when it was hot.

In addition to the '0' gauge, I have a hi-torque mini starter (hitachi type) that works like a charm.

i experienced the same thing, the advise given to me was to make sure i had a good ground, with your battery in the trunk it is critical that the ground is adequate. i had a short cable (maybe 2 ft )from battery to frame, after adding another neg. cable from battery all the way to starter the problem went away

Ground is very important but I had to replace my hi torque starter last fall just before Run and Gun with a rebuilt starter from Autozone. Starter can't handle the heat from the headers. Mine has started sounding like it has a dead spot when the starter tries to turn over the engine this week. Will be ordering a replacement Hi Torque starter soon.

YOu can also remote the solenoid like they used to do on older fords. Alot of chevy guys with longtubes will steal this idea because after a 15 minute trip, car won't turn over. Once the solenoid gets hot, it's usueless till it cools back down. Good grounds are very important as well!
