Coupe Noise

Hello,

I am new to site and hoping all of you experts can help me. I recently purchased ( 35 miles ) Superformance Daytona coupe mated with 427 Roush and Tremac 6 speed tranny. Upon acceleration (medium) this loud short KNOCK comes from which sounds like engine to transmission area but I do not think it is internal. I spoke to the installer and he said this is normal caused by the sound echo ? Sound familiar -- I am somewhat concerned before I have fun. Thanks

We have coupe 037 and I did the install on another. Neither had the noise you describe, the explanation seems thin.

Sounds like the motor or bellhousing hitting something.

Ask any coupe owner that has a well set up car and they'll tell you they're a dream to drive. There isn't any "knock" in a proper install. Badger

Could also be the exhaust hitting the frame or body.

I appreciate the comments and will check out - unfortunately motor installed 700 miles from home (Virginia) and not sure and really don't want to send it back there if it is an easy fix. Thanks

mine has a similiar knock but it did improve a lot when Dennis Olthoff installed new rear wheel bearings. I thought at first it might be too much lash in the differential.

also , I think these T56 trannys are a bit notchy and not near as smooth as I am used to. Jack the rear end up and put the car in neutral , see if you have a lot of play when turning the wheeel and tire back and forth as well as play when trying to wobble the wheel, you may have bearing problems. What number is your car?

I will try jacking rear - it sounds "loose" but that is my definition of the sound. My coupe just arrived and is # 129 - Hoping to get some time in before winter ! You have all been very helpful Thanks - I really don't want to send it back for repair but don't want to compromise my vehicle either.

I would initially check the bellhousing to engine bolts for tightness. If you think the noise is in that area, that would be my first stop.

Entdoc, when I tested the specific coupe you bought, I had it on a rack and look over the drive train. Beside the issue of the half shafts that I told you about, I also thought one of the U-Joints was going bad. Do you hear it only on acceleration? How about when you suddenly back off the power?

Putting the car on the rack is a good start to find the noise. Look for shinny spots around exhausts system and drive train hardware or any suspension hardware. Also check tightness on every bolt you can reach.

good thought on the u joints. Dennis Olthoff thought everything was fine after the bearing and shaft change, and it is definitly much better but still a little bump on decel and accelleration.

I have coupe 88 and have it on acceleration and deceleration. Feels like somebody hitting you in the back with a hammer. I also hear it at low RPMs in a high gear. I tried loctiting and tightening the rear sway bars, which seemed to help a bit, but it's still there. I also have some play in the rear diff, which a know at least a few other coupes have.
