Question Title, Registration & Emissions in Utah

I'm a couple of months away from delivery. The way it stands now my cobra will be registered in Idaho as a 2008 cobra replica, body style 1965 roadster, and so I will bring it to Utah as a used car.

I don't believe there is any problem titling or registering it in Utah, only the emission issue. The 460 engine is stamped as a D9TE-AB. I'm not sure of the year but assume it is later than 1979.

For you guys in Utah, what has been your experience and solutions to emissions?

Any insight would be appreciated.

But Utah emissions states.
It will have to have emissions equipment for 1979 and pass a visual and tail pipe test because of the year of the block.
I'll try to find the website that covers emissions.

Rich,

I guess what I am wondering is how the rest of you got around, or dealt with, the emissions issue. If you bought a FF or ERA, etc. was it registered as a 1965, or a newer replica? If 1965, then I presume there was no emissions issue. If not, then how was it handled?

There are so many problems I am reading about in posts from other states with title, registration, and emissions that I want to find out as much as I can before I bring the cobra to Utah.

Since I intend to buy the cobra already registered in another state, the registration, title, VIN, in Utah doesn't concern me too much. That process seems to be fairly clear from the DMV links you gave me. However, if any one out there has had a bad, or good, experience in that process, any insight would be appreciated.

So I guess most of it comes back to the emissions issue.

My car was registered in another state as a 1965 so a non-issue to simply do a title transfer and registration in UT.

Dan D. and RJG have good answers; trust them.

From what I can tell, the best way to avoid emmisions checks down the road is to select a true vintage engine as from what I am told, the emmissions follows the engine block.

Having said that, UT still registers in the year completed, not the year it replicates. Sort of a bummer for insurance.

It's a shame we can't just enjoy our rides without all this emissions junk. I'm sure that a few hundred (or thousand) non emissions compliance custom vehicles are going to destroy the environment in Utah and melt the ice caps.

You should see the inversion layer (SMOG) in the Salt Lake valley on a bad day, It's getting close to Denvers smog but not as bad as Los Angeles yet.

Well, you do have a point with that! It's one of the reasons why I live in Utah County. However, with the cold, lake, and mountains, you could eliminate half the cars in Salt Lake and there would still be an inversion in the valley in the winter.

I see Salt Lake valley is sending their best football team Saturday to play Utah Valley's best team.

Clean air and clean football.

We love it here in Utah even if the laws on replica cars are "interesting"!

What a great time of year! There are only two negatives in November: regular season college football is almost over, and it is turning cold so no more drives up the canyon in the open air.

One thing is for sure, it is great living in Utah! We are really fortunate to be here.
