Finished drop base oval air filter housing

Like most cobra owners hood clearance is an issue. Here are some pics of my fabbed drop base housing. I used 18 guage mild steel and mig welded it. Anyone know who supplies filters for roush engines? I can fit a filter less than 3.5 inches. I will contact K&N for a custom filter. I have a 408 with Vic Jr. intake. Thanks for the ideas from other cobra owners from a thread I stared last year on this subject. Enjoy Berm

Does your throttle arm on the carb clear?

mr0077 02-20-2008 10:45 AM

And how much clearance do you have between the inside of the filter element and the raised portion of the base?

bermblaster41 02-20-2008 10:47 AM

Yes the throttle arm clears with an easy 1/4 clearance with no mods to the linkage. Berm

I pronounce your base pretty darned good...I was concerned about "shrouding" of the lower part of the filter element by the raised part of the base, but it looks like there is very little, and it should be a net improvement over the narrow element. Will you be doing any dyno testing with/without and with this vs. with the original style base?
Good job!

Cashburn 02-20-2008 11:39 AM

Is that Cobra Air Cleaner dimensioned though? I am curious because we tried this a long time ago and could not get the proper clearances for a Cobra style oval.

jdean 02-20-2008 03:08 PM

That's about the maximum drop I have seen. Can you make me one? :-)

Blas 02-20-2008 06:40 PM

I'd be interested in the base too...
Also....K&N will custom make an filter in any depth you like...

Looks good

Hi Berm!
Nice work. That has to be an improvement.
I too realized that my motor was being choked by teenie air filters, so I whipped one up using 2 filter bases from Branda. They are thin stamped steel. saving important
space under the hood. Mine has a slight drop base.......as I made provisions for the float level screws.
My motor is plain jane looking on the outside, but has plenty of good Yates stuff on the inside. Since the pic I have re-done the plug wires. I had them done by a guy who specializes in wires. Indy cars and whatknot.

Just to give a few dimensions on the drop base. Length is 14 1/2" and width is 8" with approx1" drop. This gives plenty of room for throttle linkage and Dist clearance. For now I am using 2 NAPA gold air filters p/n 6013. Not sure on the dimensions of the original style cobra oval filters housings. This is from summit racing. If there is enough interest a friend of mine can make a more cymmetrical drop housing. He has an electronic plasma cutter. Mine is hand held and hard to be real steady with. Hope this helps Berm

Bermblaster,

I sure appluad your efforts! I have been playing with this for a while with some promising results. Getting low filter restriction and cool air is el-primo in my book. A Smokey Yunick fan for sure.

Your workmanship is very nice.

Can't tell from the photos but what is the distance from the top of the carb to the underside of lid? If the lid is the open ( flowing type lid) it may not matter but if the lid does not flow air this distance may well need to be larger then some critical value.

Not sure what the value is but it is something to consider.

Nice work!

This is a air cleaner that the guy who had the car before me had built...doesnt show but it goes out to the front with a K and N filter on it ...not sure how it will work thoughts?
still seems a little restricted to me.

berm,

Would this filter fit?

I took the original cobra air cleaner for Ford Motor Sports and a Edelbrock 14" drop base cleaner and mated them togther. I went for the 3" K&N filter (E-1963) that is the replacement for the stock 1.75" filter element.
