Default Off Topic. Sorry. Disable Ford PATS key?

This may be the first truly off topic question on this site, but I couldn't resist.

I'm afraid I was down to one key and the Mrs. done lost it while I was out a town gettin my shoulder fixed. :-(

2001 Ford Sportrac; PATS ignition device. (Passive Anti Theft).

Being quoted $250 to get new key on site.

Anyway to disable this system? This old beast has seen better days and I can drive the Cobra a thousand miles on that kinda money! Hey - there - I'm on topic again!

Perfect!

The PATS can be shut off with a custom tune. Other than that, you're out of luck.

As for the price, just shop around. It's a $20 key, and 15 minutes to program. These places (some dealers included) make it seem like a million dollar procedure. You will need two new keys though, because you need two keys to program.

Yeah, I thought it was a BIG deal and went down to the key shop to get a key made and they just used one original key
