Engine/tranny question
Hey Guys;
I own a FFR Mark II and it has a FE390 in it now with a Tremec trans. The engine is very good (412 horse/400torque) with dual qauds and a .540 lift cam. I am thinking about changing to a small block and C6 trans. Has anyone done it in a FFR and can you pull the motor and trans out without taking the body off. The 390 was put in after I pulled the body off. I admit it was easy to put the motor in that way, but what a pain putting the body and everything back on!!!! Thanks

pull the motor
We have pulled several motors out of FFRs with the body on. Remove the hood, put towels on the fenders & front, pull the trannie with the motor. I have extended my engine lift to reach the motor without being close to the front of the car. I had to counterbalance with 130 lbs of lead. Slow and easy. Use three people. One to run the lift, one to watch the motor and one under the car till you get the trannie out of the way. Remove the shifter and trannie mount. Use a small jack under the trannie till you get the motor up and to the front of the car. I'll try to post a few pics.
Dwight
note the 130 lb lead donuts on the back of the lift. I made new arm for the lift so we could reach the motor without getting close to the front/paint of the Cobra.

Thanks Dwight, can a C6 fit in the car and can it go back in the same way with a small block and C6 attached?

I never pulled one with a C6 on the motor but I think you can.

trannie
If you are going with the small block for gas mileage, you should consider a 4 speed AOD. They have an overdrive 4th gear and work great. The ones Ford used in the late 80's can be installed into a car without a computer. You use a Lokar kickdown set up off the carb to make them shift. I don't know all the details but I own a Cobra with that set up and I know the guy that installed it.

trade?
I've got 3 C-6s and a small block that I would trade for your 390 / Tremec.
This small block made 308 rear wheel HP in my Cobra.

Thanks again, if you could send me his name I would appreciate it. Do you like the small block/auto set up? Mine is just a beast with a .540 lift cam and I am tired of shifting, lol. I was just thinking it would nbe nice to get in it, turn the key, put it "D" for "do it" and drive away. Also what kind of shifter do you have and do you have a picture of your interior and engine? If so you mind sending it?

I built a 5.0 with 354 cid stroker. I have a TKO 600 with the stock shifter and I love shifting.
His name is Bob Gilliland in Muscle Shoals, Ala. 256-446-6683 he is a talker so be ready. Great guy and he will help you anyway he can.
I'll post pics of the interior and shifter.

I could get Eddie (my Ford mechanic) to built one of the C-6s and I would install new bearings and rings in the motor. I am going to do that anyway. You would need a intake and carb. I'm a fuel injection guy. Great gas mileage and the computer keeps the motor tuned all the time.
Think about it maybe we can trade.
I have 19 motors, 302,5.0, 351, 390s, 460. Hey I'll trade you a 69 Lincoln with a C-6 and 460
