Royal Purple
Apparently Royal Purple does have a fair amount of zinc from all I have read.
Also check out this independent wear test. Royal purple is one of the highest rated but is at the bottom of the attached list.

CobraEd, when I first read your post, I thought you meant Royal Purple scored towards the bottom, and I was surprised. Pleased to see I misunderstood your meaning. I've been using Royal Purple for 20,000 miles in my 496 Chevy and have no intention of changing. I'd put 5,000 miles on the engine, using non- synthetic Castrol, before going with RP and have not had any of the rumored leakage, other than the normal Chebby marking its territory. Thanks for posting the link to the test results.

Karlos,
I changed my wording to be clearer.

Interesting test! Thanks for posting that. I'm using Castrol 20w/50 Racing oil in my stroked 452 FE and may be rethinking my oil choice!

Also using Castrol. Any negative feedback on synthetics vs. regualr oil in old FEs?

Not worth the extra cost;IMO. Put in some 10w30 or 15w40 diesel oil and forget about it. If you're really into it start having oil analysis done. www.bobistheoilguy.com for more than you want to know about oil.

Impressive data!
If the old adage is true...if you build a better mouse trap, the world will beat a path to your door----- Then why don't car manufacturers use some of these oils for their first factory fill? Would they not want the best oil to protect their engine to cut down on potential warranty issues.

Also, why don't we see more professional motor sports using RP? You would think NHRA drivers would like some kind of edge?
Just thinking out loud.

RP is heavily engaged in motorsports...at all levels. They just don't have the kind of $ to lay out to become primary on a John Force type effort. You have to look for the 'side sponsor' decals to see them. Here at the Motorplex, RP hands out thosand sof dollars during the season in seed $ to guys running their oil w/ signage. I use RP in all my street cars, but RedLine Synthetics in all my older cars and the Cobra.

When I was roadracing motorcycles, Royal Purple zero weight was the oil the pros used. Hard to believe zero wt. oil would protect an engine, but it did for me. I raced a highly built single cylinder bike that made serious power. When I switched to RP I could see the difference on the dyno. My switch came as a result of getting help from Mike Velasco (Freddie Spencer's crew chief). Of course, we dumped it at the end of every race, but that's part of the cost of racing.
I wouldn't hesitate to use synthetic oil in an FE, but then I have a hydro roller cam and it's less of an issue. I ran Amsoil in my 390 FE and it didn't leak a drop. Synthetics are less of an issue when cars like ours sit a lot. They just don't break down like dino oil does.
If you're racing, and you dump it after each race, it doesn't matter whether you use synthetics or not. But.....that zero wt. Royal Purple is good stuff. I don't think I'd use it in my 428 though.

Hey SantaFe:
The numbers attached to oil weights are not absolutes. 20 weight oil is not twice as thick as 10 weight. 30 is not 3 times thicker. Also rearend oils use a different system alltogether. A 90 wt gear oil may have near the same viscosity as a 30 wt engine oil.

I've seen some crate engine makers say to use non-syn oil for the first 1000 miles or so then it's ok to switch to syn oil.
