There was a car running about 50 mph in the left lane on the Interstate ( yes , he shouldn`t have been doing that ) and really had traffic in a knot . Someone finally passed on the right when that lane opened up and cut back in front of the slow car and slammed on their brakes . The pileup sent several people to the hospital when the slower car being " taught a lesson " panicked and locked up their brakes . I can also tell some tales about traveling I 95 .
Like you , I will either get by as soon as I can or sometimes even pull off until things sort out .... I used to run circle track ( dirt ) and didn`t mind being 6 " off the car in front of me at 100 + mph as I knew he knew what he was doing ... but the highways scare the hell out of me because of the stupidity/incompetence of most drivers .

See...the trick is to gradually take it down to about 40 or so, then you speed up quickly after creating a line of folks behind the cruiser you had to pass. Everyone thinks he's the one who slowed down so much.
I've done it a few times to the errant trucker who pulls out in the left lane because he's going 1 mph faster than the trucker he's trying to pass (happens all the time on 99). After ten miles of following the basturd, I'll pull over to the right and slow him down for awhile as well. I'm sure I'm the subject of a few comments on the CB, so every now and then I'll pull out the portable radio I carry and give the other side of the story. Typically, the independents agree with me...it's usually the company haulers who pull that crap because of the trip recorders won't let them haul ass to make up time.
I don't perceive this as road rage so much as simply being the same kind of annoying basturd as the other guy. I drive 30-35k a year, so I have lots of opportunities to minister my brand of religion.

Because it's likely that the AH wants to pull back in front of me and slow down for the upcoming exit, instead of just slowing down behind me, and the other car in the slow lane, and waiting an extra 3-4 seconds to reach his exit. Most drivers are ignorant, especially the fast driving ones driving vettes. That's why I drive my POS SUV in the fast lane at about 5 mph above the limit, and don;t move over. If there is someone infront of me driving 5 mph slower than the limit, I just change lanes to the slow lane and pass them. WHAT A BIG DEAL. And it gets me when they have to pull out from a side street right in front of you, when there are no cars behind you, and then turn off the road after going 0.5 miles. What a bunch of idiots. I like it best when the truckers line up side by side, up a hill, going 40 mph with a speed limit of 65.
Like I said, GREAT THREAD. We need more of them like this.
|
Strange, I get out of the left lane for faster traffic coming up behind me and I have never been tail gated.
The person hogs who the left lane is just as much a self-righteuous AH as the person riding his/her bumper. As far as I'm concerned, it takes 2 self-righteous AHs for tail gating to occur. If you hog the lane ON PURPOSE, you are an aggressive driver, just looking to annoy others by imposing your own personal speed limit on them. Perhaps some anger management treatment is in order?

The problem is mine. I'll accept that to a certin extent. Yes, I am an AH. You guys now have your blood pressure up. Feel better.
Why don't we let this thread get back to what it was about anyway. Glyn, sorry this thread went in this direction. You deserve to get it back to where you started it.
Even if the speed limit goes back to 55, 90% or more of the drivers are still going to drive over the speed limit, just like they do now. If the speed limit is 55 they will drive 75-80 anyway.

Good on ya for keeping a good head, AH.
Some of the remarks have been unnecessarily personal.

Yea, but I can take it. One of these days I'll learn to just keep my opinions to myself.

55 coming?
Glyn, I also have taken notice of the groundswell towards the reintroduction of the 55 mph speed limit and I am amazed at the apathetic reaction I get when I discuss this with my fellow Cobra/performance car drivers. Nobody seems to remember those horrible 20+ years with the local law enforcement giddily writing tickets for the town coffers. We're doomed!

tcrist-
Fair warning- more than one racing associate of mine has executed the "pit" maneuver while driving rental cars on people that drive like you. Nary a scratch on either car.

I just heard a report on the news that the miles drivien in the month of May is down, about 20 billion miles less than one year ago. I think the total number is around 250 billion so that's around 8%. The government is squaking that with people driving less and buying fewer gallons of fuel that there is now a shortfall in tax collection from fuel sales.
1) if lowering the speed limit actually saved fuel there would be even less taxes collected from fuel sales.
2) As people go to better mpg cars, less taxes will be collected.
3) I have noticed that more and more people are driving slower, in my area. I almost never see anyone pulled over any more.
Add this all up, and the high price of fuel is hurting government revenue. The government is never content to live on less . So, lower the speed limit and write tickets all day long, and they can collect more money than before. The government cares not about poor people. This is all about them collecting more money.

Just get the @#$% outa the way
Most guys like tcrist end up rethinking ther position after a good ol boy runs them off the road and desides to stop screwing with the other drivers.Dont say you were not warned .Our big truck actually gets better milage at 55 so I stay over on the right. When im ther sometimes I feel like im in the way so il pick it up a little so im not a rolling obstickle to traffic flow.

"Our big truck actually gets better milage at 55 so I stay over on the right. When im ther sometimes I feel like im in the way so il pick it up a little so im not a rolling obstickle to traffic flow."
Consideration for other drivers - what a concept - missed by some here.
I think a lot of the problems are related to people talking on cel phones who forget they are driving and totally lose their level of awareness of what is
going on around them - lost in their center of the universe.

"Left Lane Riders" create dangerous situations for all the people behind them. Driving along in a pack behind a "left lane rider" can get me killed! That would really spoil my day.
Last week one these self righteous "riders" really did put me and a dozen other cars in a bad spot. The driver would not get over to the right lane. I could see other drivers getting really annoyed by the log-jam the "rider" was causing................then one of the cars in the log-jam had a blowout!!! Went swerving all over the highway, damn near taking out everyone! Now if we had not been jammed up by the fool in the left lane, the guy with the blowout would have had someplace safe to go to the side of the road.
Only by the grace of God did we get out of that. Needless to say I was really HOT by now! And I am not afraid to bend some sheet metal I got up that "riders @ss and showed him the "Chrome Horn" and basically moved him to the right lane. Quite a few other victims of the "rider" pulled up and cheered.
