Default Factory Five Racing type 65 Coupe sets world speed record!

I copied this from another forum:

Factory Five Sets World Record

Bonneville Salt Flat September 17, 2008

A Factory Five Racing Type 65 Coupe set a new land speed world record at Bonneville, clocking in at 216.9 mph! The FFR Coupe was built by SoFast Racing Team and competed in class C, blown fuel modified sports, with an estimated 700 hp 347 Ford small block.

Factory Five Racing sponsored the crew at SoFast Racing by supplying the frame, body and other major components.

In 1965, an original Daytona Coupe set the class G world record, running 186 mph. Factory Five Racing's Type 65 Coupe is the fastest car to ever run at Bonneville, replica or original. Factory Five congratulates the entire team at SoFast for its remarkable accomplishment.

Wow, very cool. I have always wanted to run the salt flats. One day I will go out there. Does anyone know if you can just go run on a day when they are not timing for records? Just to do it for the experience and go as far as your car/fear will let you.

Umm.... They did set a new record in their class, but not for the fastest car ever at Bonneville.... They missed that by 400+ miles per hour.

Congrats to SoFast racing and their sponsors.

You can run in the 130 or 150 club with the right equipment for a small fee.
See Tom Kirkhams thread.

I think they have park rangers that stop people from running flat out unless its a sanctioned event. (Not sure how stringent they are about that...)

The big problem is that the salt has to be groomed to make a good high speed surface to run on. The crust is also fragile and you can break through. If it rains or you go at the wrong time a year it can be a big mud pit and you can really get stuck. Check out this link to see what happened to Coddingtons crew when they went out on the salt:

Not bad, but the Salt Flats have a long history of impressive feats...

[Circa 2002 Bonneville]...Fastest Blind Turkish Bus Driver (100 mph). Never dupliciated or exceeded.

I saw this coupe at speed week Aug. 18th. A beautiful car well built and highly modified. It’s great they made the 200 mph club. That is quite an achievement. The old record from 8/07 was C/BFMS 179.364. The salt this year was fantastic. Our driver said it was like concrete. There were 3 courses in operation this year. One long and 2 short courses. Made for more runs and less waiting in line. A very well run event this year.
