Default Real Halibrands on my Unique?

Had my Unique roadster serviced by a knowledgeable shop and they told me that they believed that my wheels were real. This is a shop that is full of vintage race cars in the waiting room including a GT350 that one of the co-owners used to have.

Q: how can I tell if these wheels are real or reproductions (the are knock offs with pin drives with the Halibrand name molded into the wheels)

if real, how much are they worth? Thanks. cb

Approxomately 15 years ago Halibrand was a player in the repop Knock off type wheel market. They (Halibrand) changed hands several times and do still ocasionally make a run of the Cobra wheels. Consider yourself fortunate. You probably have a set that is as close to the originals in appearance and functionality as possible.

If they are oxidized green/gray, have the valve stems outside the cast webs, are about 5-8 pounds each and say 'Cobra II' on them they're real. They would be 7 1/2, 9 1/2. Aluminum repops from Trigo, Vintage or PS would not be oxidized, have stems between the webs, be noticably heavier and have different face contours.
Magnesium will oxidize in one to two weeks depending on humidity and dampness - unless you polish as often. See my gallerey.

Default Still Waiting for that Oxidation...

I'm still waiting for my oxidation; but then on the other hand it's only been a couple of years.... Maybe it'll come next year. But they do have "Cobra II" on them.

If they're real, then consider yourself lucky. Plenty of CC members looking for a seat of the Halibrand Cobra II magnesium wheels, including me. They're currently out of production and Halibrand, probably due to the economy, does not have a production date for the next run.

Magnesium can be confirmed easily by swabing a little vinagar somewhere on the backside of the wheel,( where it can't be seen). Vinagar will react with magnesium and not with aluminum.

I do too. I'm just afraid to let them disintegrate because I can't replace them. Polishing them is among my least favorite chores on the car.
