HiTech put one in for a guy named Ed West a while back and according to info. that I have it was not an easy swap! As a matter of fact Jay Leno consulted with Tom DiAntonio befor putting the cammer in his Cobra

Bill Malone put one in his CSX 4000 and is now on the road...beautifully done.
He wanted something just a bit nastier than the tunnel port he had in his last Cobra. :3DSMILE: |
There was a polished Kirkham getting a Cammer installed at the same shop where my car stayed during the Summer. The owner of the shop mentioned that the engine required mucho mods to fit.
Here comes the wishful thinking: If one came along and the price was right, then I might have to install one some day. Yea sure, sure. |
Does anyone know the dimensions of the SOHC and how it differs from the dimensions of a Side Oiler? I saw one that was installed in a Galaxy once, but it was hard to get an idea of how big/wide the engine was due to the large size of the space a Galaxy has under it's hood. I've only seen pics of one installed in a Cobra and it looked to be MUCH larger (on par with a 385 series) that an FE.

Is it saying that a 460/385 series is the same width as a 427FE??? -That can't be right! I can easily change the plugs in my Side Oiler!!:D |

PatrickT is pretty good with his specs. You have to shoe-horn any BB into a Cobra. Let's face it...there's not alot of room. Wrestle with a Cammer or a 385? Same work, and I'd take the Cammer anyday. Look at the bright side: with a Cammer, you can get to the plugs real easily!!

Peter at ERA built an SOHC 427 some years back (in order to sell the motor he built a car around it... or something like that. That was his story at the time). It was a tight fit requiring modifications to the frame and to the foot boxes. It also required a small alternator and other modifications to fit. The motor had a partial gear drive and you could here the gear whine from a block away...

They're neat/impressive motors but too big for the Cobra IMHO. Too heavy too. Fast in a straight line but if you think a BB has a disadvantage vis a vis a SB in handling then its two fold for the SOHC.
Besides its not historically correct. They have a Wow! factor for those seeking peoples choice at the Mom and Pop car show but I wouldn't want one in a Shelby, but hey when has anyone here agreed with me anyway. ;) Takes care. |
Sure is easier changing spark plugs though.

I should add that Peter's 427SOHC looked and sounded impressive, but it did not feel as fast, nor handle as well on the street as a good 428 with the added weight in the nose.

I have run across a blue Cobra twice on the freeway in Orange County, CA. The license place reads "CAMMER". I rode along side for a while, and it sounded good. He sure didn't like sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic!
