MSD Help...
OK,
So I just replaced my pickup in the dist and I'm back on the road, sort of... Now I have a new problem; The car starts and runs great until I get to about 3,000 - 3,500 rpm and then my tack goes berzerk.....
As soon as it goes berzerk it heads north of my redline that is set at 6,500 and I hit the rev limiter even though the rpm's are really only around 3,500!!!!!
Any ideas? I only switched out the pickup, made no other changes... Loose wire? Bad ground? The pickup is tight as is the new magnet that was included in the kit...

Make sure you have the pickup gapped correctly and that the clearance between the 8-bladed reluctor and the magnetic pickup is no more than .025-.030 in. I had that problem before and MSD didn't talk about the pickup being "adjustable" when you install it with the stainless hex screws.

Check the center graphite tab on the distributer cap for signs of arcing. Did you replace anything else or the the mag pickup?

Just the pickup... there were no signs of wear on the cap, rotor or the graphite tab.
I will check the clearance tomorrow...
Thanks for the help.

BDR,
You're welcome. Before I stumbled upon this issue, there was no mention of it anywhere on the MSD site, nor on this site. I even had to call MSD twice (after replacing the 6AL unit, cap, rotor and pickup....which at the end of the day I didn't have to do) before I reached someone that suggested checking the gap.
MSD said they were going to issue a tech bulletin about this, and start including it as an instruction with each new pickup.
Glad to hear my experience helped you and she's back to running. It baffled me for two weekends.

I guess I can return the MSD Digital 6 that I bought to replace what I thought was a defective unit.
Something so simple caused such a headache....
