Shelby Series 1??

I couldn’t find a Shelby Series 1 section, so I’ll post my question here. What happened to the old Series 1? I’m referring to the Olds powered roadster. Am I correct that Shelby no longer produces the Series 1? I ask because I spoke to a friend last night, who has a friend that is an automobile journalist who told him something. You know, one of these a friend of a friend of a …

Anyway my friend said he was told that new Shelby Series 1’s were being built in Las Vegas. Why would they build those again? Anyone here have any information on this?

Thanks,
Ernie

A couple of years ago at SAAC does Vegas, Shelby was showing a Series 2, which was supposed to come out in 2007. I think they were shooting for a price around 250K. I have not heard anything since.

I don't see why they would bother...

Woodz428 03-31-2009 10:42 AM

I recall seeing, within the last year, that the remaining Series 1's( they are building more??) that went unsold because of engine supply issues, were to be sold as turnkey minus cars. Haven't seen anything since, but that was the last I saw/heard.

What I heard is just rumor also but I heard he had dropped the Series 1 and 2 projects completely and that he wasn't happy with the power he got from the Oldsmobile engines. This is just through the rumor mill so don't take it as fact or anything like that.

Ernie,

You might want to check out the book, "Snake Bit," by Eric Davison (ISBN 076031781X) which is available from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Snake-Bit-Carr...521836&sr=11-1) and other bookstores. It gives you a first-hand view of the story behind the Shelby Series 1,

SunDude,
Thank you for the link. I see this book is from 2004 and I sense that the information from my friend's source deals with something more current. I'm going to talk to him later today to see if I can get more insight.

If anyone else has additional information, please post.

i inquired about the possibility to buy one of the Shelby Series 2 prototypes (minus motor) last year but was told by a guy at Hillbank that there was no interest in selling. The Series 2 cars are shown here with the indentions in the bumper

Recently on the H.A.M.B. site I saw photos of a public tour of the Shelby facilities in L.A. with tons of Series 1 components and bodies. After all is said and done, they will probably be auctioned off.

The aluminum chassis looks pretty similiar to the aluminum one I built for a Cobra. Also, notice the Corvette suspension parts!

Just received this article from a friend. I guess he had some good information. A Series 2 is in production as a "Green" sports car. I have no idea what that means.

He is in Las Vegas right now and says he has pictures he is sending me. I'll post them in the morning.

My friend got to the Shelby plant late in the day yesterday and watched several employees leaving a building that he thought was unused. He was able to look in before the last guy locked it up.
These must be the new Series 2's.
Anyone else find out more information on the "Green' that his email mentions?

So WHAT is the difference between the 1 and 2?? I ask, because I understood there to be quite a few Series 1's left and I'm wondering if they are just "upgrading" those to make the Series 2's. Not that someone would do that. Are these complete vehicles or turnkey minus? The Series 1 used an Olds Aurora V8, if I'm not mistaken and since they are now defunct.......

I am a long time subscriber of Sports Car Market. Keith Martin rarely gets things wrong when they break news.

As a subscribr, I got that e-mail also. The online article was part of the Insider index of news.

It's hard to believe this is a good decision for a new car in this economy
I guess the green aspect may make it famous. What's with the Cobra thing as well?

Woodz428 04-01-2009 09:11 AM

Is that the April fools issue? I googled Series 2 after reading the posts and all ( but 1) references were 2 years old and older. They were also referring to a company, that bought the tooling (Series 1) from Shelby, called SSII. They were going to produce the 2 on the 1 chassis. Now Shelby is building them???, it gets more convaluted with each passing reference. Maybe that way they could get some of our stimulus money...GREAT.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a motivation for them. apparently there were enough chassis's left over in Vegas to be "shovel-ready"

Tracer,
Thanks for the article. That explains the 'green' thing! A hybrid sport car, I guess the only thing close is the Tesla.

My friend did not say anything about the 4 & 6 cyl Cobras. Would that be another reason for stimulus money...

Hey Ron,

My post with the pictures of the new Shelby Series 2 Green Bikinis disappeared. I guess the models in the pictures were a little racy, but not much more so then other pictures posted on this site.

Well, OK. But still we should be letting others know that the purchase of a Series 2 Ford Hybrid includes a Shelby signed dashboard, Shelby signed case of the new Shelby Signature Foods Series 2 Green Chilli and a Shelby signed Series 2 Green Bikini.

I can not believe you guys got these photos! I am going to kill the supervisor over in building 3, he knows better then to keep the door open....

Ron, if you could, please remove photos, even ford doesn't have these yet, thanks

Amy...sorry, but it's not our policy to delete pics unless they are pornographic or overly violent, neither of which seems to apply in this case.

Seems to me that the picture-taker had more access than just looking through an open door.
