What do you do for a Nav System?

I absolutely love my car but find myself reluctant to take it on trips where I'm not 100% sure where I'm going, etc. Frankly that's not too fun and I'm missing out on great driving opportunities!

I carry my blackberry with me which has nav in it but it's very difficult to hear and to hold it in my hand while driving.

I could put some velcro up I guess but that's not a very pleasing solution.

What has everyone done for a nav solution?

I did a search but couldn't really find anything.

Thanks!!!

Plan your route before you go? And there are these paper things that some of us used to call MAPS.

I use my I-phone to listen to the I-pod while out cruising so I just use the Nav app on it when I need a map, works great and I like the all in one(phone,I-pod,Nav)

mapquest or any of those do a pretty good job, print it off and go.

RedBarchetta 06-08-2009 03:49 PM

I'll get lost before I ask for directions...just ask my wife.

The only two electronic devices that I take with me in the Cobra:
1. cell phone (for emergencies)
2. radar detector (because I have a tendency to break the law when driving most cars) :D

Don't need no map or stinking Nav!, My wife tells me where to go!

Silverback51 06-08-2009 04:33 PM

I just get lost and enjoy the drive.

Hi Silverback!
You hit the nail on the head!

If I want navigation, I drive my Lexus.

You guys are killing me.

I get it...we are all tough guys or we wouldn't have these cars...but getting lost in the middle of nowhere isn't too much fun!

I use a weighted fabric mount that simply sits on the transmission tunnel..........almost under the dash so it doesn't get too wet in the rain.
The standard Garmin Nuvi bracket attaches to the mount with a suction cup.
It has worked well.
I keep an Atlas in the trunk and a selection of maps in a plastic bag in the door/map pockets.
Sometimes I enjoy getting lost and sometimes I don't.

I have a coupe and the windshield is so close to the steering wheel that I can't use the glass mount (not in the "legal" places), so I have the "bean bag" mount on the trans tunnel right in front of the shift lever - works great. I have a Garmin Nuvi 765T.

Wow, I wish I lived in a place where the roads were so numerous and full of turns that I could fear getting lost. I have a new Garmin Nuvi 760 Santa brought me that is still in the box. :(

I can't get lost in Hawaii - no problem there.
In Texas I love just turning onto a road and seeing where it goes. The
roads there are great and even the two laner's have faster speed limits
than you will find in Hawaii so all is good.
Looking forward to returning early July to explore more roads.

Oye vey.

Just to beat you to your next question, for a cupholder, I hold my coffee between my legs.

Magellan 5310 with a "bean bag" mount. Set it on the tunnel. Biggest problem with it is that during the day the glare from the sun can make it difficult to read and it's difficult to hear over the pipes and road noise. I pretty much memorize the directions after the course is plotted. I carry maps, but they can be really difficult to read when driving and who wants to stop to read a map. The whole point of taking the Cobra in the first place is to drive it not sit on the side of the road reading!

I've got a Garmin Nuvi. The windshield suction cup works great - never had it fall off.

I actually preferred to follow someone who knew where we were going. That way I never had to try and listen to or read directions as I was driving. Also used to pull off the road and use the old time road maps.

I have to vote for the Garmin Nuvi. My Navigator has one and we use it on the rallies. I also have a TomTom and it's ok, but much more difficult to use than the Garmin.
